TD5 Fuel leak - harsh lesson learned and a lucky escape.
Here goes....
I refurbished Daisy's fuel pressure regulator the other day (it had been leaking for a while). I followed the tips at Discovery2.co.uk, plus my Haynes Manual and it was all good, if a little fiddly. Instead of changing the whole unit, I bought a set of all the seals and a new dome from ebay and saved even more money.
So what went wrong? When I finished, I must have moved the fuel pipe that runs from the FPR to the front of the block a little closer to the block so that it was rubbing and yesterday it wore through. The clue was the smell of paint thinners (not diesel) that came into the cabin but that passed. What made me pull over was that the rear window kept gunking with muck and sludge and it was a dry day. When I did so there was diesel dripping from the whole of the underside and all over the back of the car.
Looking on the bright side:
1. Better a diesel leak than a petrol one.
2. Good job it happened in daylight so I got the clue from the rear window.
3. Luck it happened before all the garages shut up shop.
Thanks are due to
1. NRMA for getting me off the freeway
2. Gouldbourn Mechanical and Performance centre for getting me back on it
3. DLS for getting the new pipe in the post last night

Further to my last, I've just topped up the fuel tank and I reckon Daisy lost 15 litres of fuel.
On the bright side, most of it is now rust proofing her underside.
