    Td5 Disco Clutch replacement

    Good afternoon all,
    I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had a clutch replacement in their 2004 Td5 Disco lately?

    I've just had mine done and been stung $2,610 ....
    I haven't picked the ol girl up yet to see if they have done anything extra, but that sounds like a bucket load of money for a requested clutch replacement.

    Thoughts??

    Well average cost of labour for box out and refit won't see change from 1200, plus a clutch kit around 380 and a flywheel around 700 depending on source, another hour to replace the spigot bush and rear main seal.
    Comes pretty close to the money you've been charged if it's been done right.

    What does the invoice cover?

    Add oil and any repairs to the slave cylinder and lever and you can be quickly over $2600. Plus the clutch kit and flywheel prices can be a lot higher depending on where they are sourced from. I had mine replaced for $2614.

    I'd be questioning that price, and I'd be looking at the old dual mass flywheel also, I had my clutch done at 95,000ks and the dual mass was fine, about $900, clutch was $480, rest was labour, even with the dual mass $800 and maybe an extra 1hrs labour, should still be under $2000, sold the car at 320,000ks and the dual mass and clutch was perfect.

    Of coarse that would be about right if a Land Rover dealer did the job.

    The labor is the killer. If you can do it yourself you can reduce the price dramatically. I hope for that price they replaced the dual mass flywheel, thrust bearing, washer, fork and rear main seal. if they didn't you may find it has to come out again as the flywheel should be replaced at the same time with the TD5 clutch.
    You can but the clutch and dual mass flywheel for $700 - $800 depending on the exchange rate when they were brought in through a reputable supplier. I paid $218 for the Valeo clutch and $490 for the flywheel plus freight. Some do charge much more up to 300% on this price for parts alone. I have recently done mine and can confirm this price as I have the current catalog with the actual price usually less than in the catalog.
    The labor component would be determined by the competency of the workshop with Land Rovers, but should be doable in a decent workshop in less than a day.
    Basically looking at the extra $2k, you could buy a decent engine crane or gearbox jack and any extra tools to do the job and still come out over $1000 better off, but that would also depend on your mechanical ability and time available to do this. Not an extremely hard task but time consuming and very doable in a home shed by a novice in 1-2 days with right tools. The best scenario is on a hoist or pit, but can be done on the ground as I did mine, but I removed the engine as well to do some other work.
    Cost of workshop labor would be anywhere from $90 per hour to $150 per hour.
    JC on this site would be able to give you the current fair pricing for a clutch replacement, but to be honest with labor and depending on what they pay for parts probably would be plus $2k.

    Craig that is really cheap, wish we knew that when we did ours, $800 was the cheapest we could find, in the end the dual mass was fine, so just needed the new clutch.

    No doubt you can save a lot if you source the parts yourself, and even more if you can do the work yourself. The OP was asking if the price being charged by a garage was about right (after the work had been done) and is certainly in line with what you would be charged for if the garage gets the parts, applies their own mark up, and then charge at their labour rate.
