95 litre tank, and I have put up to 92 litres (would not want to push luck much further). Light comes on with around 5-8 litres remaining.
Is the new pump genuine or patern.
Some cheapos need the float wire bending to read correctly
I would be happy with light coming on at 80 litres. Having 12-15 litres to go is a good buffer as you know you are good for at least another 100kms. But yes it can bend and even constant over filling can change the float position. Good practice to also reset trip meter when filling - I typically refill based on km's and it is only if needle is dropping faster than normal when I am driving harder and need to refill earlier.
Takes a lot of patience to get the tank full so I would check a few times to see if the light comes on at the same point, and also take note of the needle position each time.
Yeah Matt I've run mine on the fuel light a few times and its only filled say 80L. Although there was the time I ignored the fuel light and the RAC had to bring me $20 of juice. I haven't inspected my fuel pump / float level, but like others have mentioned I usually check the mileage, fill it to the top and try to find an average of how far a tank goes.
Ben.
Getting used to new fuel reading as it stays full for first 150 km. The pump is a VDO. Will check the next refill from as soon a the light comes on looks like I have a bit left though.
I once put in 93.8 litres coming into Perth from Hyden.
I think some of the litres were sweat as I climbed and climbed through the National Park with NOTHING resembling a Service station until I got over the top, and it was the cheapest diesel in Perth.

I find that the tank will take about 7 litres extra after the first shut off.
It is designed to blow back and shut off the pump to avoid overfilling the tank, but when I need range I fill it to the filler neck sloooowly. Of course this is when I am on a long trip and will soon empty some out.
I find when really full I get over 150Kms on full , even towing my camper at 12L per 100km.
I am darned if I know why the damn thing always seems to have a puke all over me when I am filling from a Jerry can. I cannot imagine they are faster than a high flow pump.
