I'm assuming you have discounted some type of clutch shudder if it continues when you are driving after going thru the gears. I see you have a manual.
TD5 99 Manual
Car has been fine for the 18 months I have owned (though I do need to do the FPR).
Driving home from work today, took off from a set of lights and felt a strong shudder through the drive train. This persisted through each gear.
Starts as soon as car moves forward.
Shudder is not as bad once I reach around 2500 revs.
Shudder only under load, goes away when coasting.
Very noticeable through gear stick, nothing through steering wheel.
Seems to be idling a little rough.
Checked :-
Front and rear prop shaft - no real play anywhere
Engine mounts - Rubber above the holes
How can I check the Harmonic Balancer?
Any other suggestions please. At this stage I am not prepared to drive it anywhere until I can be sure I am not going to do further damage, which means having to catch a taxi to work![]()

Thanks Discolaw.
Yes it's a manual. I don't think it would be the clutch as it continues with the clutch completely out.
I have never come across anything like this before and I have spent the last few hours searching this site to no avail.

Handbrake shoes not releasing properly?
Probably a seized universal joint in one of the drive shafts. Chock all 4 wheels thoroughly get under it with the trans in neutral, handbrake off. Rotate all joints and look for slackness in the unis. With a strong torch inspect the uni joint cups for broken seals, rust coloured dust etc.
I had a quick check this arvo but I need to do a thorough inspection tomorrow, or maybe the weekend![]()

I would be suspecting the clutch as well. Mine developed a vibration before it eventually failed. If it matches Engine rpm and not road speed then this would suggest it is between the gearbox input side back to engine. If it is the harmonic balancer you will be able to feel the play if you try and move it with your hand.
The shot double cardan joint in the front drive shaft of my V8 D2 first manifest itself a as vibration/shudder on take off.
I'd discount that as a possible cause as quickly as you can - because if they let go as speed - they can do expensive damage.
Edit.. Doh... missed what you had already checked![]()
