    Ignition - do I need a locksmith?

My ignition key goes in, but now more often than not will not turn on (and the barrel mechanism appears quite sloppy).

What are my options, given I intend to do another 100K in the mighty beast?

Shouldn't make any difference but I am talking about the 99 D2 steering wheel etc in my RRC. It has the old 315 kHz? system.

    Thanks in anticipation

Your options vary from buy a new barrel to pull out the wafers, or some where in between.

After being stopped at my mother in laws house I decided that my barrel need some attention. I didn't like the prospect of being stopped on a remote track.

In the end I removed the offending wafer and put the barrel back in. So far no issues.

    Cheers

Thanks Ron, much apprecviated - given that I am totally out of my depth, anyone in Perth - who to go to? I've heard A1 in Morley area are pretty good. My local people in Freo (starting with Gron) can be very $$$$$, but I will check with them first. cheers gavin

I searched and found a tutorial when I replaced my steering lock for a D1 unit. The key would go in but not turn. As an emergency measure I removed the bolts & lock pushed the steering lock plunger in & put a Tie Wrap round to stop it engaging. Put the lock back in place with standard SHCS bolts M8 x 12 ? Removed the electrical switch, two screws. So putting the key in place registered on the electronic reader then I turned the, loose switch,to start with a stubbie screw driver. After changing the complete switch for new, via a locksmith to match the old key I found that it still was not perfect. Last weekend I stripped the lock and as per tutorial ground off any minor protrusions . Still not good, I increased the angle on the point of the keys, I then reduced the key thickness from 2.6mm to 2.1mm this solved the problem. I could not find the spring for the steel ball I was about to use the one from the original lock but this seemed to create more issues so I left it out. So all the wafers in cleaned & lubed with Vaseline. No steel ball, thinner key, solved the problem it works wonderfully.

Each time my ignition starts to jam I spray a little CRC into it and it fixes it right up.

they recommend that you don't use crc in locks you should use graphite powder

I have found that if you tap the key with a hammer it will often then allow you to turn it. Obviously not a hard tap. I have used this method to get myself back home before.

When I replaced my ignition barrel, the locksmith that I took the new one (and old one) too reconfigure it for the original keys claimed that he was confident that he could repair my original ignition barrel. Since I had already purchase the replacement I had it reconfigured and fitted it anyway. I have my original here which I can get repaired if ever the need arises.

Tristan came around and did his magic on Saturday - highly recommended! Not only did he fix the lock mechanism, but I now also have a blank that I can hide somewhere which will manually open the doors if I ever loose the eleckery again.
