    Won't Start at 8am, Starts at 1pm

    Hi All

Have an odd ball starting issue in a 2001 TD5 Disco.

Engine will turn over but will not fire in the morning anytime before lunch.

Come back at 1 or 2pm and the vehicle starts first kick.

Have changed batteries with no effect.

Changed the fuel filter and air bleed valve - no effect

    Nanacom shows no engine errors

Injectors, glow plug , relay , fuel pump tests using the computer all test ok

    Fuel pump sounds normal.

Showed no air bubbles on a full tank of fuel while starting and revving the motor (suggested injector seal test)

    Got it to Start

Tried priming the fuel pump (ignition on, 5 pumps of the pedal) 3 days in a row and it started.

    Got another problem now

Having trouble getting the prime routine to engage now. The engine, and fuel water indicator just pulse when the ignition is turned on and R6 relay under the bonnet is clicking ?????

    Any ideas?

    Regards

    Peter A

You say the batteries are charged, but how old are the batteries?

I had persistent 4 amigos that would always come back after clearing. At the same time also had a battery that needed charging every couple of days if sitting idle, or using power windows after parking. When I finally replaced with a new battery, the Amigos cleared and never came back.

My point is lack of enough battery capacity - even if charged - might play tricks on things.

The batteries seem ok, one is fairly new and the other was load tested. Borderline but still in spec.

Noticed the battery voltage dropping to 10.8 volts when turning over the motor with both batteries.

Hard to read this in the afternoon as it fires up straight away.

Might pull the fuel pump and check the filters. Something is working hard.

    Battery

Battery output depends on the ambient temp the colder it
    is the less out put.
Common thing here in UK car won't start in morning garage
come to pick up car it starts first time.

TD5 will not start at about 11volts it will turn over but not fire.

Try it with a good battery of the proper capacity.

Or just pour some hot water over the starting battery, or gently heat with a hair dryer.
Its almost certainly the battery, as the ECU will drop out somewhere in the 11 volt range( about 11.4?) and the dash will become Christmas tree like.

Flipped out the fuel pump and replaced with a mates pump. No effect.

Applied a bit of heat with the heat gun around the battery and it fired up second go.

Will head over and grab a new battery.

    Thanks all.

    Fitted a new battery Supercharge MF31 - 931 1000cca.

Turns over won't start this morning.

Ran the fuel purge process. Started first kick.

    Go figure.

Replacement fuel pump runs as quiet as the one I took out.

Check all your earths and terminals.

D2s have these really unusual battery terminals . When I bought mine it didn't make it home as it stopped with the dash lit up like a Christmas tree.

The negatrive terminal on the battery was frozen and you couldn't undo it, so I ended up cutting it off and having an auto elec crimp on a new terminal.
I have never had a starting or running problem since.
This exact thing may not be your problem but clean termnals will help.

It sounds like the non return valve in the fuel filter may be crook if you have to reprime before start. Have you also checked for a tiny leak in a fuel line? Have a look at the front of the tank above the cross member for evidence of diesel.

When its cold, can you hear the pump whirring?

Check the earth to the fuel pump behind the battery./

Had a resolution to this starting issue.

Had a few reasons to suspect the main ECU.

Had a repairer swap in another ECU and it hasn't missed a start in months.

Suspect a piggy back chip fitted on the ECU a few years ago is the culprit.

There was no oil in the ECU.

The fact that a fuel line purge would allow the vehicle to start on most occasions led me up the garden path.

    Thanks for all input.
