In Australia, the D2 manuals and auto's use the same intercooler as the tranny oil cooler is also fitted on manuals (at least with those with tow packs). And as you have figured, we are a lot more sensitive to the impact of high temps when pursuing performance mods.

what i can say(again based on RAVE ...not cos i consider it a bible but cos it was the only one i've had close to hand)...and some personal findigs cos it relaxed me to play with signals and oscilloscope and made various tests in my garage :

the ECM will implement limp mode by overheat protection when the coolant temp. based on signal from ECT sensor gets close to 120*C(be aware that these NTC sensors are not very accurate) at the same time the gauge goes up from the middle...to avoid that the ECM starts the electric cooling(aircon) fan at 110*C to help cooling... it's not crytical(but not healthy though) for the Td5 engine to run at 110*C and it often happens under extreme load and those who dont know these kind of things will not even notice it as the gauge stays put at the middle then ... that's one of the worst engineered things on a D2 IMO.

reading here and generally on the web about this EGT thing which came to me only on this forum(thanks for that) i tend to say that LR should have made some moves in this direction too

Definitely a temp gauge for dummies. It is nothing more than a glorified "cold", "warm", "normal " and "too hot - sorry should have warned you earlier" warning light system, not a temperature gauge.

By the time it moves off the normal centre position more often than not it is too late. And of course this assumes you have not lost water and are no longer getting a proper reading to start with.

The MadMan Engine Management System (EMS) is a populate addition in hot climates as it gives you a second coolant temp reading, oil temp, oil pressure, battery voltage, low coolant level alarm and the all important EGT reading in the one unit and you can set custom alarm levels for all.

This would be my nomination for the second most important mod.

it seems that thursday i'll get the gauge ... i used the search facility on this site but i couldnt find a tutorial... i understood that it must be fitted before the turbo , found something about the EGR blanking plate, is that good enough or could i get some more info about how to please?

Tdi temp guages are the same.

Once you have an EGT fitted you will notice they go up and down almost instantly and bear almost no correlation to engine (water) temperature.

You could easily melt a piston crown or a turbo before the (water) temp guage has a chance to rise significantly.

Isuzu 4BD1Ts (fitted to Australian military landies) have a manufacturer maximum EGT of 750oC, however they have an oil spray to keep the bottom of the piston cool.

There is a spot on manifold that is ideal to be drilled and tapped

    Use good quality sensors
