    Oil leak

Friend borrowed the car while I am overseas. 2 days ago he told me one of the light on the dashboar lit and saw smoke from the engine bay. It happened in coburg area and drove it to airport and left it there. Saw oil under the car and no oil in the stick left. He sent me picture to me. Hopefully anyone can suggest what could happpen.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but it might be the oil line from the turbo. Check to see if the bolts have come loose. You might be lucky and just need to tighten them up. I'm not to sure but I think there is a gasket there as well. It may have broken up. Good luck with it.

I had a leak in that area recently and it was the oil drain pipe from the turbo. Found the bolts were loose but I fitted a new gasket as well. Reused gaskets there are known to leak assuming , of course, yours had a gasket in the first place. Its a cheap easy fix if that's the cause of the leak but it must have been a decent one from the description.

Umm... Light came on the dash, he saw smoke... AND THEN DROVE FROM COBURG TO THE AIRPORT?

I would suggest the light in the dash was low oil pressure, given the oil leak and that fact there is apparently no oil on the dipstick. And it's been driven for 15kms like that? I suspect it may well be irrelevant where the leak is coming from now. If it was in fact the oil pressure light, it's amazing it actually made it to the airport.

For what it's worth, given what appears to be a spray of oil on the exhaust manifold, I'd be checking that the full flow oil filter is done up first, then checking the lid for the centrifuge rotor housing, then looking at busted turbo hoses/loose oil filter adaptor plate.

Landed in Melbourne 17th August at 8pm. Friends picked us up with two cars. Went straight to see the car park outside their friend's house for 2 weeks. Wife wasnt happy so were the kids. Not their fault, they were very tired after 12 hrs travelling.

Checked the car and it was the centrifuge filter cover came off. This is the second times it happens in 6 months. They said the charging light was on as well when it happened.

Got RACV to tow it that night. Came around 10.30pm at my house. Neighbour went out and complained as their dogs went crazy because the noise from the tow truck and it was late. Sometimes I dont understand people, they could see it was a tow truck which mean it was an accident or emergency. Or maybe they could send their dogs to dog school or introduce them with noises that they are familiar to. That what I did and thought when I had a dog.

Anyway, next day after work I tried to find heli coil at local shop (supercheap, repco, burson, total tools) but they dont have the right size. Decided to get a longer bolt for the time being from bunnings.

Got home and straight put the new bolts in. Fill new oil and everything is fine. The engine noise seems fine. except the charging light and aribag suspension lights were on. So I thought I will give a good clean because the engine bay has oil everywhere.

Went to carwash just around the corner and on the way I notice the lights were not bright and wiper seem very slow. Close to carwash m+s was flashing. Washed the car and it wont start after that. Looks the battery had died or no charged.

Called my friend and asked him to jump start the car and it was fine. He followed me to my house just in case. about 2-3 km away from the carwash all the lights on the dashboar went crazy until everything was off luckily it was right in front of my house and had enough time to park the car inside the garage.

It looks like the alternator was not charging as the battery is only 2-3 months old.

Could it be the alternator or the brake fuse as I read on thread mentioned it alternator will not chaged if the brake fuse is gone. I will have a look tonite anyway.

My question is, what is the relation betweek leaking oil from the centrifuge filter with dead alternator? Could it be just coincidence? Anything else I should check except the brake fuse before I change the alternator?

Good to see an update from you. I would have thought coincidence unless the drive belt was coated in oil and the alternator was not turning due to slipping.

Replaced the alternator inc pump and get longer bolts for the centrifuge oil filter cap yesterday. So far so good now.
