Joel I wheel pretty regularly and not just a few bits and bobs...never had issues with travel that you encountered. While the manufacturer says 5psi at all times, as you noted (quite a few) people have commented that they dont need to do so and have no pinching. With zero they do NOT compromise wheel travel - the spring will compress and extend as it was supposed to...if you want to be really anal you can remove the valves from the lines when off road.
As for the other comment above that the rear air suspension is what really separates D1 from D2, I get where you are coming from, but owning both for many years (still own both) and where my D2 is coil sprung I can tell you that the D2 is very different from a D1 irrespective of rear suspension set up - both technically and in real every day experience.
My TCW.

For lifted sls with spacers i would advise the extended bump stops be used.
I neglected to fit the extended bump stops and had an air bag destroyed after hitting a rather harsh washout at speed on a dirt road.
I am not %100 sure but the only reason i can see for the damage that occurred was the lower moulding of the airbag making contact with the top!
In the weeks since creating this post, ive had a Bag fail, so Im looking at doing sonething in the very near future. I have also purchased HD Dobbos 2" for the front end.
Now, Ive also stumbled upon Baffles thread, about using a BOSS triple convolute bag to gain upto 4" lift in the rear end.
Boss 2603 Triple Airbag | Boss Air Suspension
After speaking to AirBagMan today, they inform me that a convolute style bag is no good in the back end of the disco, and the convolute bags need to operated in a perfect UP/DOWN motion, and not in a slight arc like they will experience in a trailing arm situation, otherwise, they have a tendancy to "pop out" the side.
Their suggestion is to stick with a Rolling Taperd sleeve style bag...
So, a little more googling and I discover that Arnotts do a Gen3 bag for the P38 that offers 2 to 3" aditional extension over the OEM bag. Cant find any instances of people shoe-horning them into the D2 tho...
Arnott Generation III Air Springs
Perhaps a little bit of measuring and comparing the lengths of the d2 bag and Arnotts Gen 3 bags.
Disagree. Mine has had a two inch lift (SLS) for about 8 months and I have had no problems. I have not even heard about this until this thread.
So I rang my lift kit supplier this morning who is also a LR repair specialist and he told me that the standard bump stops are fine.
As for the OP. Keep your SLS and lift it if you wish, I did and it is awsome.
My D2a had an SLS lift... and standard bump stops.. no drama.
I drove it like that for over 3 years - it's still like that and the new owner loves it.
Longer travel shocks are of more value than extended bump stops in my view.
I think it depends who you speak to with regards to bump stops. When I got my lift kit, the kit came with bump stop blocks and I was told to put them on as when it's in full articulation, the extra 2 inches can do damage to the bags when compressed.

Got hold of BOSS tech support today, who tells me that their bags are heavier duty to stop the center bellow "popping out" and, thanks to the wonder of Facebook, I found a fellow D2 owner that has fitted the BOSS airbag upgrade, and lifted it about 4". I will be extracting info from him in the comming days!
Not true, inflating the poly airs will bring the car up to the limit of spring rate, being a combination of the force provided by the bellows, and the original coil, and being directly influenced by the mass on the spring unit. In laymans terms, it'll pump up quite similarly to normal EAS, to a degree.
I can post a pic of my old D2 with a 300kg quad on the front of the drawbar if you don't believe me :P it brought it up to above stock height once inflated (after being loaded).
