I've been trying to stop my D2 whistling for a while now, no luck. My mechanic replaced a belt tensioner, didn't work.
How are you going with it?

Hi Islandnomad
When I first got my td5 it made a whistle noise which was just a cracked flex joint. I had that replaced at my local exhaust shop all good.
If you search on the forums most TD5's start leaking between the head and the exhaust manifold. I could here noise but could not see the soot (black tell tale leak). It wasn't until I took the turbo off that I could see the oil filter covered with soot.
I have removed the exhaust header. I have de webbed it. I have been struggling to stop this machine popping radiator hoses and leaking coolant since i bought it. When I bought it I had the LAND ROVER SPECIALIST check it out and put a low water warning thing in it.
From what I read on the forums. While I have the exhaust and turbo off I think that I am going to remove the head and change gasket.
I am not getting oil in the water!
It does NOT seem to run rough.
Oil level is ok.
I have tried to test for CO2 in the system. (no signs)
BUT Coolant is always leaking somewhere!
Seems to be pressurizing to me.

Graeme,
I have had this whistling problem for a couple of years. It is intermittent. Sometimes doesn't happen for weeks then comes back.
My mechanic thought it was my fan belt slipping and replaced the belt tensioner, didn't work.
I don't have any leaks in my coolant either. Haven't had the exhaust manifold off though, did that work?
Apparently my head is a little warped, typical LR problem with bad castings, I use a special oil to try and keep this in check.
I had forgotten about it till I saw your post. Don't have any idea what it is really!
After taking the exhaust manifold off. It is obvious that exhaust was leaking between manifold and turbo. It WILL be what my problem with noise was. While having the exhaust manifold off I have de webbed it. Most of the guys that have the manifold off enlarge the outer stud holes new studs and put it back together.
Where my manifold sits against the head does not look too bad. I will take it to shop to get them to check and true it.
When I am sure it is true I will take it and the turbo to cic and have a chat to them about ceramic coating.
So my car is off the road at the moment until machined, coated. I have not put it back together yet.

I had bad bearings in idler pulley that sits under aircon pump, next to power steering pump. more bearing noise than whistle and bad when it was there.
Just replacing my head and while I was at it we took the manifold off as it was warped. Just had it shaved and will go back on with new high tensile studs, nuts as well as a new gasket. I'm pretty sure that this is the whistle I was getting as my mechanic said it was pretty badly warped and 2 studs had also broken.
I had the head cleaned and Faced at All Torque Engineering. They faced the exhaust manifold for me too. I put the engine back together and then ordered a new tensioner pulley. (noisy bearing)
So far all seems ok.
Oh and I could not believe the amount of gunk in the Inlet manifold. cleaned this before reassembly too.
