Checked the red plug at the ecu for oil contamination?![]()
G'day All,
We're at Wilpena Pound on our way through Central Australia but have had a bit of a hiccup with the 2004 D2a auto which started to play up this morning. Went for a short 2km drive parked and left it standing for about 20 minutes . Started again and drove off - within 100 metres the engine began to get lumpy and started to clank.
Stopped to take a look - nothing obvious so we drove back to camp. As revs went up engine became smoother but when at idle, lumpy again.
Checked faults on Nanocom.

FAULT 03-05 driver demand problem 1 (INTERMIT.) is a new fault and I cleared it - a couple of restarts and the engine running an revving did not see it return.
FAULT 03-07 air flow circuit (INTERMIT.) is also a new one but I found that the MAF sensor had not been clipped into place but was still connected - so perhaps that explains this fault?
The following codes have been there since the remap, can't be cleared and I have just live with them as a anomaly caused by the ECU map.

Recently replaced the MAF and the turbo boost modulator. I also swapped out the rocker cover injector harness as the lumpy symptoms were reminiscent of this.
Clanking is no longer evident but the engines is still lumpy and runs roughly.
Anyway, I'm stuck here until I can solve the issue (was supposed to be moving on to Arkaroola tomorrow but it looks like the plan may required some adjustment!)
Any useful input and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Yes I have, clean as a whistle.
I did record some fuelling data and the cylinder balance looks really out! See attached file taken at idle.
Crank Case Position Sensor on the way out?
Its crankshaft position sensor,located on the belhousing,drivers side.Not likeley to be the issue,if thats faulty its a show stopper,ie no engine running at all.
With all them faults Im going with oil in the harness.Have you checked the plug at the front of the head???? If thats contaminated clean it and keep cleaning until you get home.Oil may not have reached the ECU yet.
ALSO,CHECK YOUR FUEL,even by draining some from the filter drain,IS IT CONTAMINATED WITH PETROL!!!!You will smell it if it is.

Given the list of faults (even without the 'ghost faults') it would seem most likely to be some kind of wiring issue. If you've got no oil in the harness, maybe have a good look at the small wiring loom that runs along the front of the head and around the A/C compressor, not that uncommon for them to rub through somewhere, and would certainly explain the air flow meter fault...
Failing that, is your EGR bypassed? If not, could be stuck open?
Those cylinder balances do look pretty ordinary, as you say... Smelt the oil for diesel contamination? Although it may well just be a result of a wiring issue...
FWIW, I understand the 'ghost faults' you have are a result of an incorrect base file. If it's actually an EU3 file, but just with the wrong tune IDs, you may be able to transfer the fuel maps over to the correct base file using td5 map editor, if your remap provider won't help. Maybe something to look into when you get back, I think there is a thread somewhere by Offtrack addressing a similar issue, although in his case he had been given an EU3 map for an EU2 motor....
*edit* One more thought, perhaps a collapsed boost hose? Although I'd expect to see a lower manifold pressure in that case....

looking at your file the cylinder balance looks pretty normal (unless mine isn't normal either) The ones I have looked at tend to jump around.
If the crank angle sensor goes the engine wont start - just crank over and that's it.
How about checking some of the main earths. If one of those is dodgy they can do some strange things.
Hope you solve it and can move on
If the injector fault is cleared does it re-occur? Your new loom may have a broken wire at the injector connector. If so then I understand they are quite repairable.

I know it's left field but the first thing I thought of was the harmonic balancer.
It will rattle at idle and can cause idle vibrations if the rubber has "let go".
For piece of mind check there is rotational movement.
