    yes, before i got it,
I put in a new radiator & flushed & flushed the system when i bought it.
I knew I'd have to do the H'gasket at some stage but wasn't banking on a brand new head.
    anyhow....

I was NOT planning on doing the head gasket. I have just done the head gasket. My head looked very similar to your! I have just had the head machined. Old head 2 fuel galleries.(internal)
It turns out that someone has replaced the radiator with the newer type. lower outlet restricted for fuel cooler upper outlet blocked. now I understand why a lot AULROians block the oil cooler off!

As part of the the cooling system leaks I have done the oil cooler, water pump, hoses etc

Now I just need to monitor oil levels with injector seals just having been done

Don't block off the oil cooler on a TD5
Even in the UK when tuning them Gary Wood found that the main reason for failure when things get near the edge is cooking the oil.
I have heard it said that some later models didn't have oil coolers I don't know as I have never seen one.
I suspect it could be a bad idea in our climate.

hose from oil cooler goes around the back of motor to point in radiator that is Blocked! hence there is no flow anyway. whether it is blocked at oil cooler or radiator still no flow through cooling system that way. quick search here brings info about this. the landrover amendment says DO NOT drill radiator to allow flow.

Yet on a D2a the coolant from the oil cooler does not go to the radiator. It goes through the EGR and then to the expansion tank.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Yep I see this too.

I have Just put the engine back together. Last thing I want to do is cook it. My gut feeling is to drill the radiator, to keep the flow. The oil cooler is in coolant regardless! block it 2 less hoses to leak.

Recently when I made inquiries about the best way to remove my egr cooler(as egr is now disconnected) it was suggested by some to just block the hose as the oil cooler is in coolant flow.

Others have said to not do this. Although I have yet to do either I have chosen to not block the hose as having it connected can't do any harm, whereas blocking it off I am not 100% sure that it won't be detrimental.

As far as I can tell the old radiators use to have a split system, and the new radiators are just a single system. Maybe flow is wrong if we drill radiator?
My hoses are back where they were. But radiator is blocked so there is no flow at oil cooler so I may as well plug it at cooler and forget the pipe.
since rebuild I have driven it far enough to see watre temp go up / down on the Nanocom hence thermostat is open and back home.

    I hear ya,
It's was blanked off as i have the newer type radiator installed, but looking in there i think it would have better coolant flow through oil cooler reconnected.

Well getting there, new head is on

the oil pump bolt was tight & felt like it had some sort of bond on the thread but it came out clean so i can only assume it had nothing on it, done 290,000 kms..

what a pain in the ass job,
lots of thread locker on the bolt now
    Sump refitted
