    TD5 Head

Ok so I have the head off the D2,
    Replacing with AMC head
I had diesel in the coolant, replaced the fuel cooler & flushed & drove at least half a dozen times, reflushing cooling system each time, still diesel in there.

Can someone please identify what the red circled part on the head is, does it have anything to do with the internal fuel gallery??

I think that's a one way check valve for the oil feed to the head.
As best I know the internal fuel galleries are only in the head.

Maybe some other members can shed some light on a flushing technique and confirm what my thoughts are.
    Cheers, Kyle

Not sure what the bit in the head said but Kyle is correct that the fuel passage is in the head only.

My money is on what Kyle suggested, an oil gallery to the cam and rocker gear with an anti drain back valve.

    Thanks guys,
The head gasket was separating around this area to no1 cylinder.
Must be an internal crack or porous between fuel & coolant gallery somewhere
At 290 on the clock, it still had plastic dowels although someone may have put plastic ones back at some stage, who knows.
Lots of jobs to do, put new brushes/regulator in the alternator whilst easy access, lucky cause there wasn't much left on the old brushes.
Half way through fitting a complete new hose kit thanks to Mario at (roverlordoffroadspares)(great service & parts)
new water pump & yet to fit, bugger to get to, will remove rotor housing as the sump will be coming off soon too.
Finally better do the dreaded oil pump bolt as well.
It had 270 on the clock when i bought it, chances were it was done or would have come loose by now, 2 out of 3 chances sounded good but i want to be sure now!!!
Need a new belt tensioner as well.
    With coolant, oil & filters
My back pocket is getting a pounding, ouch...

If you are doing it all yourself you are saving thousands. Not just on labour but also sourcing parts at the right prices.

I know, if I couldn't repair this myself it would have been sold "as is"
I had decided to give up on the D2 and was either going to wreck it or sell as is, I even bought another car and was getting out of the 4wd ownership but I made the mistake of driving it yet after another rad flush & decided I liked it to much.
Not long ago I got a low stall torque converter fitted, TRS chipped ECU, EU3 intercooler, on top of all the setup/maintenance i'd done.
    Just some here
exhaust manifold machined de-webbed + high tensile studs with copper nuts

    New radiator
    Bosch MAP sensor
    VDO air flow meter
    Tekonsha P3 electric brakes
    Injector loom
    82 Deg thermostat
    Hawkeye

It had a TJM winch bar & new tyres when i got it
Tows my caravan like it's not even there, so i plan on keeping it for a while yet....

    Roverv8,
Where did you get your AMC Head and all your parts as I need one too. Should I do my coolant hoses at the same time?
    regards

I got the head from Turners in the UK.
I had the chance to buy the AMC Head here in Australia form Hoppers heads in Melbourne, the price worked out the same after import duties/GST handling fee's.
They also sell the fitting kit (top end Gaskets/Head bolts)

Re coolant hoses - i would recommend to replace as well as water pump unless you have done this recently.
Also how old is the Radiator, mine was replaced not long after i bought the D2
Cheap insurance as far as im concerned after fitting a new head but each to there own.
Things can add up very Quickly
    Best of luck to you

Well again because of easy access & so i don't have to worry I thought i'd check out the oil cooler & replace the orings, glad i did.
there was a fair bit of rusty crud behind it on the block & the cooler housing wasn't sealing properly on 1 end.
there was no visible coolant leak but the pictures tell the story.

That rust suggests to me that at some time this motor has been running straight water instead of coolant.
