Smile d2 V8 Gear lever connection wrong/ faulty?

This is one for the brains trust. I lost 1st, 3rd and 5th gear in my manual D2 V8. I did some reading and everything seemed to point to the bias plate so I bought one and opened up the gear lever to change it over. When i got the gear lever out the ball that attaches to the bottom of the lever stayed in the gear box. Ok i think its supposed to do that. When i put the lever back together the ball slips down inside the gear box. Not supposed to do that. I've consulted RAVE and I cant find any detail to help me here. Is the ball that supposed to initiate the gear change inside the top of the gear box supposed to be permanently attached to the gear lever? If its not supposed to be, what stops it from sliding down inside the gear box. Is there a clip or something that's busted? Otherwise i assume that the gear lever somehow has that ball permanently attached.

By the way. After my minor hear attack when the ball slid down to the bottom of the gear box. I got a flexible spring grabber thing and attached a rare earth magnet (powerful) and tried to drag it out that way. It wouldn't come back. So I ended up drilling out the rivets in the panel on top of the drive train hump, then removing the gear lever mount from the top of the gear box. That worked well as it came straight back out, but now I need to know what its supposed to look like before I put it back.

Ideas or RAVE references gladly accepted. Hope someone has seen this before and knows how to help. I can do photos if everyone is a little lost.

    Thanks

Hi, see the link Allbrit.de - Ersatzteile für LAND ROVER & MG ROVER the most common is that the plastic yoke bush(9) is disintegrated there, the ball(11) must sit within 9 and held there at 9's top by 10 if you see what i mean.

    maybe this helps too http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/1015584-post10.html

You sir are an absolute genius. Off to Landrover tomorrow to see if they have the parts. It all makes sense when you see the drawings. Don't know why its not in RAVE.
