V8 or TD5??
It started with a Neighbor inviting me along to a 4x4 day with him and his mates (all with families along as well).
My neighbor has had his Toyota Hilux Crew cab for a few months and he is setting it up for touring but he has little off road experience.
The idea of this day was for his mates to show him how it's done. Funny they didn't know a Land Rover was going to be along to really show them how it's done.
I stayed pretty quite early on. When we pulled up an 80 series Toyota had the bonnet up as he was having running (tune) problems and it was missing. He was busy spraying WD on the air flow flap of his petrol cruiser.
I let my tyres down early as I knew the road was pretty corrugated and rough. None of the others did so I fell behind a bit early on as I was traveling a little slower to keep the heat down in my tyres with the lower pressures.
We stopped and the others let there tyres down before we hit the beach and then we stopped on the beach while the kids played in the sand and we had some lunch.
After lunch we put my neighbors Hilux in 2wd and got it bogged then the others showed him how to use his MaxTrax. I don't have a set, I've seen them used but I'm no expert so I stood back and watched.
Then we drove up the beach and decided to have a crack at a pretty steep exit track of the beach. There were 3, one looked massively steep, long and uneven, the middle that we chose looked easier but still reasonably hard then a short track that had a sharp pinch at the top that I expect most would bottom out on.
So the idea hear was that my neighbor would need to use his winch to get up. I don't think the others expected that they would too.
It started with the 80 series with a mild lift having several goes at it. Chopping it up as he had open diffs and it was pretty uneven. He failed. Then a Prado with a lift and rear diff lock. The first few times I don't think his E-Diff was engaged but he also had several goes and made it worse again.
Then enter the Disco 2. Not much to tell really, went almost straight up. I had to back up a little bit a couple of times because it shifted sideways but I didn't go all the way back down and start again like the others were.
The Video is uploading to Vimeo now.
Then the best one of all. There was a fair amount of traffic up and down the beach and plenty more Hill Billy people than us. So this guy in a 4 inch lifted GU, 4.2L turbo Patrol with at least an exhaust and front and rear diff locks decides to show us how it's done. He didn't see me drive up, just the others still trying and winching of my Disco as it was the only vehicle at the top.
This Patrol goes up the longest, steep and most uneven track. First attempt he spins up and bogs down. Next attempt he takes with much more speed, the front wheel shoots up in the air and it appeared that it came very close to flipping backward and rolling. Third attempt he breaks his tail shaft, rolls back down and starts climbing under his truck. I did happen to notice he might have been showing off to his 2 female passengers.
So after all the other of our crew got up the hill, I had to go back and show the Patrol Driver how it's done. I drove up, wound down my window and just asked how much lift he had, 3 or 4 inches he replied, cool I said then I just casually drove up the hill in first gear, low range with no excessive revs, just slowly crawled up, with backing up a couple of times to change line.
Video also to come.
Go the Land Rover.
Happy Days.
V8 or TD5??
Shame it was a family day, otherwise you could have nailed the two chicks!
TD5Inside improved.

Love it. Nice work. I copped the same sort of stuff a few weeks ago from a couple of Toyota drivers running through the dunes near border track. I just sat there in comfort and drove through, while they bounced all over the place.
Just showing up the Nissan.

Awesome![]()
Traction control obviously works well. I just noticed at about 15 seconds into the first video the front left wheel is in the air but the front right still spins up the dirt.
Happy Days.

Good Video's thanks !
do you have CDL fitted /engaged - wondering if it made a difference or if it was traction control only.
Cheers
