Look at the car first, 2002 was the change over period, from July/August 2002 was the first D2a update, which had the CDL already in it.

Don't assume just because it's a 2002 model, it doesn't have the CDL, look at the car, you can tell by the diagram in front of the Hi/Lo lever, if you can move the lever sideways, you have a CDL, you will see it on the Diagram.

My 2002 manual did not have the internals. After using it offroad for several years i installed a defender output housing.

Mine has several cosmetic differences to earlier d2's even though it was a d2 not d2a. They must have started bringing them into the production line

    Cheers

Thanks for the info. From my understanding the defender output housing has a lower high range gear. Since I am going to be running 32s this sounds like the best option for me. If you dont mind me asking how much and where did you source the parts from.
Thank for all the prompt replys guys.

Defender/D2 same low range gear ratio, it's the high range ratio that is lower in the Defender, some Defender owners put the D2 transfer case in the Defender to give better ratios for touring (ie) lower revs at higher speeds.

Yes that is right. I will be running larger tyres therefore will lose some of the performance the disco originally had. The defender high range gears will aid with acceleration in high range as there high range gears are lower then the discos high range gears. (Would this be correct) My low range will not be affected but that does not worry me to much.
    Sorry about all these questions.
    Thanks.

That's what this forums all about, asking questions

I wouldn't do it, you'll hate it, I would get 4.11 ratios in the diffs, this will bring you back to standard ratios in the D2, but only if you're going to 33s, up to 32s I wouldn't bother.

Remember, if you're going to more than 7% over size with tyres, you'll need an engineering certificate(NSW) even just going to 32s, puts you 9.6% over size, you can go to 245/75/16 without an Engineers cert, of coarse this is NSW I'm talking, other states may be different.

Or you could buy a Defender, just throw on some good rubber, a UHF and you're done

You are getting comfort and virtually the same offroad ability as a deefer in a d2.

I wont say where i got mine done as i wouldn't recommend them to do it.

    Cheers

Thanks for the advice. I just thought that since i am going to get the cdl internals regardless of what car they come from (D2 or Defender) any way I may as well get the defender one as it would give a slight advantage.

Hey mate is there any chance you could P.M the rough cost. I have a family of mechanics and free access to a workshop and hoist so would do the work myself. All I need is the part. Also did you notice any difference between the gearing when you got it.

    CDL For Manual DII

    $7,000 or so say.

$1.2k approx including bits but that was over 10 years ago when it was all a bit mysterious and no one was doing it really.

    Cheers

Ps no change in gearing but it could have been a d1 housing...the guy that did it said deefer but who knows really
