I used rubber grease as I reckon that it is the most slippery stuff I have found.

Also make sure you cover the fuel hose to keep out dirt and coolant.
    Thanks Dave much apprecaited

Coolant and Air con water are easy to tell apart. Firstly air con will give off a fair amount and will be clear water, whereas coolant will have color, usually green or red.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Your passenger side leak may be the water pump. It is a bit hard to tell from the picture though. In case you haven't discovered it yet there is a fantastic D2 maintenance site at www.discovery2.co.uk

This will give you lots of step by step instructions for fixing things that go wrong on your D2. For example www.discovery2.co.uk - Leaking Fuel Cooler Fix and www.discovery2.co.uk - Workshop TD5 Water Pump Replacement. (if it is the waterpump).

The fuel cooler is a bit interesting . Yes take it out to fit the new orings. Also, if it doesn't go back together nicely, it may have been made 'no longer round' by overtightened worm drive hose clamps. Some careful reshaping may help. The clamp just needs to be tight enough to hold the plastic end plug in place. it should not be able to slide off because there is a slight flare on the end of the cooler.

I haven't done my water pump yet, but it is on my 'things to tackle very shortly' list.

+1 for buying the special hose clamp pliers. They make everything with hoses so much easier.

For the passenger side coolant leak there are 2 spots worth checking that are known leakers.
-Under/behind the turbo is a small hose that goes onto the oil cooler.
It's a different size each end, a Ford 6cyl heater hose is the right size although it needs to be cut to length.
-Behind the exhaust manifold on the head is a screw in plug.
It has a big hex and on some motors may loosen and weep.

When the motor is cold have a look and trace the white stain the red coolant leaves to the source.
    Cheers, Kyle.

Looks like you were spot on Bernie

I've narrowed the passenger leak down to the water pump, leak traced to the bottom of it. Traced the red/white line back to the source which was still wet (thanks Kyle).

Good news is all other leaks have been fixed (radiator, hoses, fuel cooler, drain plug) so thanks guys.

Just read the instructions from disco uk...time to go sob in the driveway under the old girl. When will it stop

    Hi Guys

After reading many threads and instructions! I've now looked over and under the water pump but have a few of questions:

    1. do you really have to drain the oil before removing the filter and centrifugal top. not sure if I'm reading that instruction correctly
    2. How will you know if its just the seals on the water pump and not the whole thing that needs replacing
    3. How do you get to the nut/seals on the block behind the pump, are there instructions on how to do this

I'm on a steep learning curve here be gentle. Hopefully the attached photos help with the advice, extent of the issue

    Cheers

Hey mate, I haven't done my water pump yet but it will be done soon. so this is not first hand just what I have gleaned from reading.

I don't think that you have to drain the oil, but if you are in need of an oil change you could as you will be removing the filters to give you access to things.

It sounds like if it is leaking, it's time for a new pump.

In the process on the D2 uk site, there is a fair bit of stuff which has to come off to give you access to all the bolts on the water pump housing.

I would also print out and follow the process in the workshop manual rather than the D2 site. The website tutorials are great so that you can identify what you are looking at when you are actually on the spanners but the manual will give you the step by step and is the bible. For example I did a lot of reading and looking at the td5 head gasket tutorials in the good oil here before and during the replacement of my head gasket but it was the manual pages in front of me in the shed. I haven't read the manual for the water pump yet though so if it tells you to take most of the car apart to change a water pump then you need to make some value judgements
