    Coolant Leak!

    Hi Everyone

This weekend I changed the radiator and hoses on my D2 (had it since new, 2001 model no CDL internals)

Anyway after driving to work and back yesterday I saw a leak this morning underneath. On closer inspection it seems to be loosing coolant in two places (not the radiator or the hoses, all good there)

I'll investigate further tomorrow however the photos attached show where it appears to be leaking.

    1. on the drivers side under the long pipe thing (don't know what its called, can anyone help) it appears to be leaking on the join at each end onto the new hose below, engine mount!!
    2. It appears to be coming out somewhere on the passenger side, not sure if its coming out of an engine nut at the bottom or if it even could?

It doesn't appear to be spray from one place to another as there is no cross over present and both leaks are around the mid point or lower and on opposite sides of the engine.

The engine is clean, so visibility is good. Its really the passenger side one that is perplexing. the driver side one seems to be coming from the long pipe thing!! what ever its called.

As you can tell I'm really new to engine stuff...lots of enthusiasm though figured after 13 years of ownership it was best to edumacate myself on the old girl.

Any help would be really appreciated, I'm keen to fix it myself.

    Cheers

    Stevie

If it's like mine it is the clamp on the hose just up from where it is showing.

Funny mine had heaps of leaks when I did all the hoses just like yours.

I started on a Lap and had to add about 10MM coolant when arriving in Mildura from Sydney.
Then it stopped and has used no water since , and that is about 16KK and 6 months.
I took off the worm drive clips that I originally fitted and refitted the spring clips after a few days . What a PITA. I just think they need quite a bit of time to bed in.

So give it a couple of weeks or so and maybe it will stop. If you have used worm drive clips , retension them after say a week.
    Regards Philip A
BTW I did my fuel cooler orings so that is one spot you may have to bite the bullet and replace them as they don't like being disturbed.

I recently did my fuel cooler. If you are going to do it yourself I recommend that you remove it completely from the vehicle.

Then spend twenty bucks on this.

Hose Clamp Plier Clip Clip R Brand NEW END OF Financial Year Sale | eBay

It will be money well spent.

Also make sure you use Viton rubber "O" rings.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Thanks d2dave, much appreciated. In relation to the o rings are they land rover d2 specific or is there are off the shelf size I should get?

Just a thought, you will get condensation dripping from the air conditioning system under the vehicle. Usually on the right hand side, down on to the front drive shaft. A mod to stop the condensation dripping onto the carden shaft is to re route it to the left hand side. Is coolant or condensation dripping? Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Stevie. You can get the O rings from a bearing shop. My local did not have them in stock so I found them at a hydraulics shop.

The generic part number is BS 225 and as I said earlier make sure they are viton rubber. You will require two of them and make sure you lube them when fitting. Do not use any sealant such as silicone.

I used rubber grease as I reckon that it is the most slippery stuff I have found.

Also make sure you cover the fuel hose to keep out dirt and coolant.

Thanks Bob, I'll have a look and see if it is a combination of aircon condensation and splashover from under the engine, much appreciated
