    Disco 2 DIY Brake disk / pads

    Hi all,

    Just had a quick search and consulted the Good Oil and came up with nothing specific to Disco 2 brakes.

    I'm about to re-do my 2002 D2's brakes - the disks are in poor shape (let's not talk about the metal shavings on the rims), so I figure they need doing although I'm not sure about the minimum thickness etc.

    Pads are a given. They need to be replaced.

    I've had a glance at UrbanPanzer's site www.discovery2.co.uk / Front Disc and Pads which is pretty good. It only details the front brakes however.

    Could anyone offer me some experienced input on pitfalls and gotchas before I undertake this on my own?

    I can save several hundred bucks by doing it myself - I'm always keen for that as long as I can do it as well and safely as a workshop.

    It's all very straightforward with no real Gotchas.

    I can assure you that having a disc that is able to be removed by undoing a screw is much easier than taking off the hub like in an RRC.

    Its just a case of removing the disc pad holder, removing the caliper, then removing and replacing the disc.

    I bought slotted discs for the front and Bendix 4x4 pads and very happy with no squeal but good bite.

    Make sure to follow the correct bleeding procedure after doing the swap.
    and check to see the caliper/pad slides are freely moving.

    Why do you need to bleed the brakes after replacing the discs and pads?

    Replacing the pads is a basic job. Rotors same.

    I've never actually bled brakes before. Always seemed complex and in need of a million hands on the job.

    I've done rotors and pads recently in my partner's ford focus. I compressed the pistons gradually and removed some fluid from the reservoir as I went. The topped up as required on completion.

    Same gig?

    Why do you need to bleed the brakes after replacing the discs and pads?

    Replacing the pads is a basic job. Rotors same.
    I always bleed after pad change . If you push the fluid out of the caliper up the lines, you are pushing the most polluted fluid from water entry to flexible lines and rubber from the calipers back into the system.
    I open the bleed nipple when I retract the caliper to reduce this.
    In any case the system should be flushed every 2 years , and this rarely happens so it is a good time to do it.

    No need to bleed the brakes. I have spent a few years working as a brake specialist many years ago and we never bled brakes after a pad change.

    And if you open the bleed nipple to retract the pistons, as I have some times done, you still should not need to bleed as all you are doing is pushing fluid out, not taking air in.

    Philip A, I was intending to grab some bendix pads as I have used them on our other car. Is there a particular type you feel are best for a D2? Or is it just their 4x4/heavy duty ones.

    Also, slotted rotors on the front. Did you have standard on the rear still? What manufacturer did you choose? I haven't yet started shopping around for these. It would be superb if I could jut walk into repco and pick up the lot! ;-)

    I just have the 4x4 bendix pads.
    I bought the slotted rotors from ebay company . They are RDA discs custom slotted by them. Good to deal with.
