Question TD5 auto trans failure and replacement question

Hey guys, the auto in the Disco lost all drive the other day, not in a position at the moment to spend 5k on a reco unit I've been trying to source a good second hand unit.
I think I've found one but I not sure for certain if it will be right as I've had two differing opinions, hopefully you bright sparks will know?
My vehicle is a 2002 TD5 and the auto I've sourced is a 2001 V8. I did a search on the net and found that they are the same gearbox apart from the bell-housing and converter. I rang my mechanic to see if he thought this was correct before I made the purchase and he told me that they are exactly the same externally but differ very much internally and aren't interchangeable.
Can someone set me straight please?
    Cheers.

Your mechanic is correct - not interchangeable.

    Try TRS in Adelaide .

Try Ken on this forum member Outback 1, he wrecks D2s and has had autos from low km vehicles. Re the other suggestion pm Jason675 on this forum with his second hand trans from the other before you buy.

The autogearbox, ZF4HP22EF was installed in both the D2 4.0LV8 & TD5. Your research is correct. TD5 utilizes a different Gearbox ECU also.
The box was changed to a ZF4HP24EF with the 4.6L V8.
This information is quite clearly stated in RAVE

I was reading another thread a while ago where some one said that the V8 and Td5 were the same,as both use a ZF4HP22.

Now if both boxes were side by side without bell housing how would you tell the difference?

Also I just had a browse through RAVE and the EAT ECU pin out diagram makes no mention of engine type.

Whether or not they are the same I don't know, just thought I would throw this in for discussion.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
