    TD5 Auto doing strange things...

2001 td5 auto, TRS chip otherwise pretty stock.

its only done this 10 times over the past 6 months.
It happens most of the time on the high way at say 90km when over taking a truck when i put my foot down the try and make the td5 get going.
Altho it did do it in town at about 30-40km last night.

It kicks down fine, and revs that gear out then towards the end of the rev range it pauses like its thinking of grabbing another gear, but instead just goes back in the same gear the revs then to about 4g and it does it again, some times 4 times in a row until i back off. its like it gets stuck.....

    - end of gear, pause, power back on only to hit 4g then does it again and again.

I never do 100% throttle nor do i drive it hard, its only when I'm on the highway needing to overtake and not take 2km to do it. the auto fluid has been checked and topped up recently, oils was still pretty golden. the auto shifts smoothly and the car has done 153000km

anyone ever had this. what do you think?

Ha Ha when I first got mine this had me beat also.

BUT it is not going back to third or whatever.

What happens is that it kicks down to third unlock, then locks into third locked, then goes to fourth unlocked ( which you think is third) , then goes to fourth locked.
This happens at moderate throttle opening as well as flat out.
Don't worry be happy it is normal.

ah i see, that might be it, but mine seems like it does is 4 or 5 times in a row or unil i let off the throttle. it kind of feels like its hitting the rev limiter each time. did u also feel this?

    This might be something different.

If your MAF has failed over reading the engine will start to miss at high revs /High load ( high air demand) then drop revs and stay in the same gear
This is really outside the scope of comment with the info you have given so far.
Can you do a short video of what the car is doing.

When I first bought mine it did something like that but started a big miss at about 3900RPM flat out in first gear , but then it changed into second gear due to an over reading MAF that the ECU read as zero when it exceeded the recognisable input.

There could be other reasons also such as a wastegate sticking.
I suggest that you first check for a sticking wastegate by trying to move the wastegate rod manually.
If you have access to another MAF try that also.
My money would be on the MAF rather than anything to do with the transmission.
A Nanocom read of errors may also help with diagnosis although MAF faults do not always register.

I don't think there is any lock up in third when being driven in Drive.

I am pretty sure mine does when accelerating hard at 70Kmh.

Mine started doing it on cold mornings - exactly as described.

Put the diagnostic on it whilst tearing up a hill....MAF goes past 700 then 0..then over 700 then 0.... it is coincident with the surging.Wwhen it wams up it's ok.

I tried a clean...no luck. Until it gets to the point where it really ****s me I'll put up with it.

However my M and S lights came on tonight, and I'm stuck in third. most of the time. Grrr. Now it's dark and I can't be arsed climbing under a car. Haven't told the wife yet, since her car is in for a service and she'll be taking the Landy on Friday.
