    D2 - Bits and pieces.

So this is not a car I play with at all, I have a few questions as a mate just bought one in a moment of insanity.

Big thanks to Alien for his assistance in getting the immobiliser to play nice as the key fob is a bit dicky. Now got some new micro switches coming to sort that.

Anyway, it started when a mate took a friend to the auctions today to help them buy a car they were looking at. That didn't go to plan and it went for more than he wanted to pay, but they rolled in a nice looking V8 D2 behind it, and my mate made a bid or 2 on it and next he knows it's sitting in his workshop...

So, it's as traded, but looks like the dealer may have detailed it before realising it needed a bit too much doing to it, so it's very nice to look at outside. The inside shows years of family use, but with a good clean, is usable.

Main issues are easy to fix. It goes ok, stops and steers well, but there are some clunks from underneath and a few bushes need replacing. After that, the only major issue is that the engine is running VERY rich. Now, the injection system looks a bit different to the system of the D1 which I'm quite familiar with. Is it a similar system that uses a stand alone ECU, and the same sensors or is it completely different? Just wondering if I can apply the same troubleshooting logic and are the sensors the same or have the same values?

Finally, if we get it all running nicely and he likes it (he will - he used to own a 2 door RRC and sold it in a moment of stupidity) the only thing that may put him off owning it long term would be the running cost.

Now, I know the easiest thing to do to fix that would be to sell it and buy one with a TD5 already fitted, but as he likes doing things the hard way - is the conversion to the TD5 fairly straightforward?

Being that he owns and runs a Diesel Mechanicing Workshop and he'll be getting his boys to spin the spanners - the labour costs can be covered easily, so no issue there, and no issue with the skills required. More along the lines of engine control, etc - is it straightforward or not?

If he goes down this road, he'd be looking for a wreck so all parts can be had, and a new interior sourced.

    Any info greatly appreciated.

    Cheers - Gav

    Uhmm...
    Well.....
IF you have the donor vehicle right next to you.
IF you're well versed in Land Rover idiosyncrasies.
IF you've got a full wiring diagram.
    IF you're a masochist.
IF you've got a fairly warped definition of what 'straightforward' is.
Yes. It's easy. Just swap everything Td5 related over, after you remove the V8 stuff.....
    Like I said, easy
In all honesty, for what a decent Td5 D2 goes for now does your mate is much better just buying one and pinching common bits (TC, diffs, etc) off the V8 if he needs to.
    So to summarise...
    Can it be done? Yes.

Ah yes I agree entirely my friend, but this guy doesn't always do easy and his idea of a cheap TD5 wouldn't be your or mine. You would faint if I told you what he picked this one up for - I'm sure it's value as scrap would be higher.

Having recently put the D2 TD5 engine Auto and wiring loom into a 300tdi Defender and all the associated fuel lines, pump, fittings etc.
I can speak with experience and authority on the subject.

Just don't bother. There is no value or money to be saved converting a D2 V8 to TD5 or vice versa. Just buy the vehicle you want and leave it at that.

I achieved a very nice conversion into something not available anywhere off the shelf, or close to the money charged for parts only. Simply because I had the parts on hand from the donor vehicle.
But.. not insulting anyone, as ideas are great and seem logical and easy without the knowing.......no way I would waste 1 turn of a spanner for this, it isn't masochistic its just plain silly.

PS he might faint if he honestly knew what he was contemplating. Kind of like buying a brand new Red car and taking it to the panel shop for respray white and then getting the upholstery redone to match, when all you had to do was buy a white one in the first place.

Thanks for that. I'll tell him not to bother.

Anyone know about the EFI system I mentioned on the V8? Is it the same as the D1 EFI?

Deepening on the usage why not go to a LPG system?
If going to diesel conversion why not engineer in something slightly bigger?
You could keep the Isuzu crew happy or look at small Cummins/Perkins?
I wonder what would fit in the engine bay hole.
    Cheers, Kyle

Is it the same as the D1 EFI?
No it is a Bosch Motronic sytem similar to Those in BMWs.

It is a new generation (google Thor) with O2 sensors, Knock sensors, EDIS with no distributor,Etc Etc., and an electronic advance map.

So what's the most likely thing causing it to run rich - temp sensor? Anyone got a drawing of where the sensors are and what range they should operate in?

IMHO the most common reason to run rich would be dead O2 sensors.

Maybe temp sensor but haven't heard much about Thor problems with this.

The Motronic is OBD2 so can be read with an OBD 2 reader, and of course this is the best way of checking it. There are a lot of posts in 38A on O2 sensors.

Agreed, change the upstream O2 sensors first, you should get a major improvement...hopefully.

If you have Hawkeye/Nanocom, also check the MAF.
