Modest lift + castor correction = need for double double cardan

    Hi all,

I have 525mm between the centre of the front wheels to the guard...so 25mm lift off stock - although it came up 40mm from where mine was...RAVE says 500mm + or - 15mm.

I then had 3 degree castor correction bushes put in the front trailing arms (so 4 bushes all up) and she then handled on the highway beautifully. Before the castor correction she had turned into a dog to drive on the straight and narrow!

Problem is that the lift caused a minor vibration and the castor correction made it worse.

I then had the rear shaft and front shaft reconditioned by Hardy Spicer and new rubber coupling, rear tail shaft bush and spigot and bolts etc. In the front end Spicers did a new ball, and new HD greasable uni joints.

Still had vibration - so I took front shaft out and drove on the rear only...very smooth. Took front shaft back to HS to have them re-balance. They put a much smaller boot on because the other one was deforming with speed and re-balanced and pronounced it tight as a fishes bum....back on and...same vibration especially going up hills...so I reckon its got to be the front uni joint operating at near binding angle. I think it needs a double cardan on the diff end as well as output housing end (stock is output housing end only).

    Have I missed anything?

Unless there are other options I will probably get a British Offroad double double cardan new shaft or APT new shaft

    Cheers

    Hello ozscott

I've got a 50mm lift with no castor correction, did need a wheel re-alignment though. I redid the DC shaft myself and paid to have it balanced.....No issues !

Just a silly thought....When was your last wheel balance ???

    Cheers,

    Jason

Modest lift + castor correction = need for double double cardan

Thanks Jason. A couple of weeks ago...but vibration is affected by load and not there when front shaft is removed so not wheels.

Could have got a d3 cheaper than what I have spent over the last few years....but then...it wouldn't be a d2...

Front Differential ? Crown wheel losing teeth? It's getting worse and on both acceleration and deceleration.

Mine had about a 40mm lift, it had RR rear springs in the front, so not a lift kit but HD springs to compensate for the bull bar and dual batteries, but it sat up slightly at the front. It would chew front drive shafts all the time, I think it was five in the two years I had it. At least one was a Chinese cheapy that was replaced under warranty, but it was so common, I got to know the sound

thanks Jeff. its got me stumped but even though there is no whine there is a faint rumble without the front shaft in so that might point to front diff unloaded but still grumbly...torque it up and worse? I am still not sure. Worth pulling centre out and looking although if no metal in oil perhaps not....will.check first.

    cheers

One easy thing to check is the angle of the front uni to the flange.

If it is at right angles or near as with a standard shaft then there should be no need for a DC joint. ie the shaft is in a right angle line to the flange on the diff.

The axle is designed to swing through an arc that keeps the front uni near ideal.
If you have put caster correction bushes in that have changed this a LOT then you have a problem. The castor correction bushes can cause the problem as the angle from the diff to the transfer is increased from the lift, then changed more by the kit.
I cannot see why have fitted a caster kit with a 40 mm lift, although it seems higher than that.
    Regards Philip A
