    AM/ FM Radio antenna

I have installed a good quality aerial in lieu of the window original as where I live the 'Polarising/ directional' nature of it is annoying.

Problem.....it doesn't receive any better but is Omni-directional.

Is the original boosted? Where is it and can I simply connect the new one into it?

    Yes it's boosted
Well you could maybe fit the new antenna but it is below the back RH window AFAIK.

If they are metal tinted you'll suffer signal issues.

When you say a good quality antenna do you mean a helical whip, that looks like a CB antenna?
If you fit a properly tuned FM helical whip you should get better reception, but of course they don't go down and can be a nuisance.
Won't do much for AM however as the radio sensitivity will be poor.

Well there is not a lot you can do as the radio sensitivity is the problem.

You can buy a radio with a slightly better AM tuner like a Pioneer, but if you add a booster you may just amplify interference as well at long ranges.

The advent of LED traffic lights has really affected AM reception in the suburbs. I don't understand how they got away with such RF interference.

The Pioneer in my D2 is better than my Honda Jazz OEM radio, but that is not saying much.

If you could buy a Eurovox from the 80s, they had much better AM sensitivity. Eurovox will rebuild D2 radios but I think the AM sensitivity of the newer ones is just so-so. I think most AM stages are on an IC now and most use the same one.

If you call them in Melbourne they may be able to offer something, as there is a charming lady tech there who is helpful.

    AM radio

On a recent Kimberley trip I found that my AM radio had interference from a fridge that was placed next to the RH rear window, next to the radio antenna. All I did was plug in a generic aerial into the back of the head unit itself and as a temporary measure just ran the cable up the A pillar and attached the aerial to the roof rail. It bypasses the booster and does mean that the radio will work with the ignition off. (Normally the ignition has to be in the ON position to energise the signal booster.) AM reception was excellent even in remote WA. There is no reason why you could not do something similar with a more permanent aerial mounting method.

This was on a D2a with Visteon head unit.

    Cheers,

Back in 2011 i purchased a 'new' original equipment 5880R head unit to replace my original fitted 5780R Radio / Cassette. Got it from GO TECHNOLOGIES in Scoresby, Melbourne the successors of EUROVOX. Originally i was only after repair for the 5780 and purchase of a reco CD Stacker. When i mentioned i was surprised to be able to upgrade !! and buy a new original equipment item for my old D2 they told me they had a lot of them. $180 (and they'll pop the old one out and the new one in for that price) perfect for those of us who like to keep the truck looking as original as possible.
