looking. for advice, drivung on one stuufed sls bag from Birdsville to Melbourne

Hi everyone I am considering driving from Birdsville to Melbourne with one fully deflated sls bag (cracked) and a fully loaded car. What are the possible impacts to the car. Would also welcome any advice. Cheers

Very bad idea ! You will break something.

Given they take about 15 minutes to replace, just set up your tent, have a beer, order a new bag and replace.

Try TRS in Adelaide for a new bag. They should be able to get one to your fairly quickly.

Or MR Automotive in Bris as there is direct freight from Bris to Birdsville via Skytrans freight.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Unfortunately as i learnt today nothing happens quickly here, days and sometimes weeks. What could break not intending to drive faster than 80 kph and tyre pressure around 25psi.

You could seriously crack something like the chassis at 80Kmh. Others may have better advice on this as Ive never done it!.

If you must move here is a possible bush fix: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...ml#post1271856

I would phone MR Automotive and see how soon they could get you a bag, rather than do some really serious damage halfway to Marree!

Forgot to mention already changed suspension type to springs so that i would have a fairly level rear end and not burn the sls compressor. Any recommendations for mechanics along my intended route?

So to clarify, you have replaced the rear air bags with springs?
I'm no expert on this but i'd say as long as the spring rates are right then you may be OK. I've heard people driving with deflated airs bags breaking some plastic part at the bottom of where the airbag goes because they fitted a lift kit and now the bump stops don't make contact before the end of stroke of the spring. I'f you are carrying load and the springs are sagged this might happen to you.

I'm not sure if i've got this all right but someone here should be able to clarify.

Sorry for the confusion. Only changed the computer to Springs as it otherwise try to inflate the busted sls bag.

I also have sls spacers for the extra lift. And i must admit after this trip with the family in Simpson Desert and this happening with a year old bag, i will be changing to coil springs.

Each to their own. I think you would be wasting a good vehicle by converting to coils.

A bit late now but a spare airbag doesn't take up much space or weigh much.

Get yourself some rubber, ribbed floor mat should have some give if you stack it in layers, either make a stack to place in place of the airbag or see if you can stack the layers of rubber on the axle to meet up with the bump stop. Rubber washer shapes (circles with the centre cut out) interleaved with full circles should also provide some give.

But as suggested before if you have a few days get a pair mailed to you, they must have at least two mail deliveries a week. Skytrans Monday and Thursday from Brisbane to Mt Isa returns Tue and Fri stops at Birdsville each time. West wing Aviation flies from Pt Augusta, don't know how frequently but they drop mail to the cattle stations a long the way to Birdsville. The road house should be able to provide some details.
