    D2a oil Question....

Hi guys ive just got a 04 discovery td5 , i know there are a few threads on oils n what not (ive looked already) my question is this , i live in Mount Isa as you can imagine it gets hot here (54degs sometimes) the new disco comes from Brisbane (never see higher than 35?) so should i go for a "hotter" oil? or any recommendations from anyone up this way ? thanks guys i just dont want to kill my new toy as its still very shiny

The handbook for a TD5 D2 gives 5W-30 full synthetic as the oil to use up to the maximum temperature on the page with an option of 5W-40 AFAIR.

I use Nulon diesel 5w-30 full synthetic and had zero use on my trip around the block, although it didn't really get over about 35-38C.

IMHO you can safely use 5W-40 and many use Penrite semi synthetic 5W-40 diesel but the TD5 was designed for light oils so I personally wouldn't go putting HPR30 or whatever in.

I'm no expert but full synthetic oils resist heat related breakdown I believe .
We use Penrite Full Synthetic 5w40. Have read of people up that way using 10w40 and even 15w40..but I'm not sure I would . If your cooling system both coolant and oil are up to scratch I couldnt see what difference the viscosity of the oil would make in high outside temp . A quality full synthetic should see you right .

I prefer a specific diesel oil personally.
Full Synthetic 5W-30 Diesel Formula Long Life Engine Oil- Nulon Australia

    dexos2 Brands | GM
If you note that those particular Edge types are not Dexos 2 approved.

I don't know how important that is but all being equal I prefer the highest spec.
While Edge is on special now , will it be next time you want it?

I am looking at it for my Jazz but agian I use Nulon full Syn 5-30 petrol type oil for it, and wonder if its worth changing to save $20 .

Yes, fully synth is the way to go, and if you want the best for your engine there are oils specially formulated for EUI engines, it's specified on them " for unit injector/PD engines" , my mechanics told me after they opened the Td5 that it's very similar with the VW PD engines and such oil is the best for it...maybe it's a 'placebo' but it seemed to me that the engine is smoother since i'm using this kind of oil(Comma DPD 5W40 fully synthetic) , the previous owner used some poor quality oil i think

Slunnie My RAVE says Petrol like you have but diesel 5W-30 ,5W-40, 5W-50 for all temps on page 175 of the owners handbook . Your graph appears to be for petrol only. Diesel is different.

The graph won't copy but you will see petrol is different to diesel.
Petrol is 5W-30 up to 35C and 5w-50 for all temps or 10W-,40,50,60

That's interesting! My RAVE is different to your RAVE. You might have a newer version than me. This is what my version says:

oil of the incorrect specification can lead to high
oil and fuel consumption and ultimately to
    damaged components.

Oil to the correct specification contains additives
which disperse the corrosive acids formed by
combustion and prevent the formation of sludge
which can block the oil ways. Additional oil additives
    should not be used.

Always adhere to the recommended servicing
    intervals.

    Engine oil viscosity

The above chart indicates the ambient temperature
ranges which each engine oil viscosity is suitable for.

Engine oil - V8 - low compression engine
Use a 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA: A2,
and having a viscosity band recommended for the
    temperature range of your locality.

Engine oil - V8 - high compression engine
Use a 5W/30 oil meeting specification ACEA: A1,
(API SJ or ILSAC GF2 for USA).

NOTE: ACEA: A2 can be used.

    Engine oil - Td5
Use oil meeting specification ACEA: A1, B1 or B2.
    Cheers
