    disco 2 v8 2000, report after 2 years and 60k of mileage

Gday, dear audience. I know that this is very useful information about expences and maintenance cost. So, here's my approximate report after two years of owning. Bought it with 162k on the clock, average condition, faulty MAF, SLS replaced with coil springs. During this two years, i:
    - replaced faulty MAF
    - cleaned petrol injectors in ultrasonic bath with oil solvent
    - installed bullbar
    - replaced rear left abs sensor
    - installed 245/75r16 M/T ovation ecovision tires with used rims
    - fixed/charged aircon (welded a hole in one of the tubes near the frame, above left front wheel)
    - replaced condenser fan with cooling fan from other car
    - converted to LPG
    - foolishly hydrolocked engine. It sucked water through intake when i crossed huge puddle at high speed. Car stopped, started after few efforts, ran about a week whith strange noise in engine, and finally failed with piston rod holed the block. In my area we call it "fist of friendship"
    - replaced engine whith used 4,6
    - replaced MAF (it died because of the water)
    - replaced starter (piston rod holed engine block and smashed starter)
    - refreshed engine with new piston rings, rod bearings, head gaskets
    - left catalytic converter fell apart at the welding seam, self-made clamp and asbestos thread solved this fault
    - replaced thermostat
    - replaced front right wheel hub
    - replaced front springs, front shock lower bushes, bump stops
    - fixed window regulating machanism in the front door, drivers side
Now i have 220k on the clock, and pretty much to do:
    - tappets rattling
    - front propshaft failed (since yesterday i'm on RWD )
    - rear door window regulators (driver and passenger sides)
    - rear door sagging
    - transfer case leaking
    - other little faults that, as we say here "don't affect maximum speed"
P.S. just previewed the post and thought "damn...long list, should i buy toyota?"

    hi there,

interesting but when you look at your list it comes in 3 stages:

    1. fixing bits when you got it some due to previuos owners neglect. everybody does this on used car purchases
    2. v8's hate water, and you point out that disaster was your fault. frustrating i know but nothing to do with the general performance of the car.
    3. now other bits that if you had not had the engine failure, it may not seem so bad.
i have 282k on mine, and just completed 3 years of ownership here in the tropics of png, major failures in this time:
    1. condensor rad
    2. condenser fan
    3. drivers door actuator
    4. remote receiver
i have also, as a preventative measure changed all coolant hoses.

given yours is 15 years old, as mine is, take out your engine "misshap" its not all bad!

    chin up, jerry

Maybe not a Toyota. A snorkel perhaps?

That's a long list alright. My V8 D1 with 149K hasn't had to have much done to it at all and it was my daily driver for more than 10 years. Leaking rear axle seal, split header cooling tank, duff throttle pot sensor and drooping headlining are about it, apart from normal servicing consumables like filters, plug leads, radiator hoses, thermostats, brake rotors and pads, and a new donut.

Of course I've upgraded a few things along the way - Falcon EL thermo fans, uprated radiator, better shock absorbers and springs, and upgraded [Pirtek] power steering, transmission and engine oil cooler pipes, improved [louder] exhaust system.

It's been pretty reliable [once the infamous spyder problem was resolved under warranty not long after I bought it] and is a pleasure to drive and listen to [!], but like all V8s with auto trans is thirsty around town.

I've been tempted a few times to swap it for a D2a, but maybe the devil you know......
