Okaaaay. The final score is 1 bolt sheared, 5 to grind off and 10 that came (fairly) quietly. The Irwin 5 piece grip set worked reasonably well. It had a tendency to cam out at first. The solution was to attach a 3/8" short extension bar, then a 3/8 - 1/2 hexagonal adaptor, then a short 1/2 extension bar, then slap a jack under the lot, pump away and put the sprung weight of the car on the bolt (the axle stands keeping Daisy aloft are under the axles). Then put a hoofing great wrench on the hex adaptor and give it a tug. If you hear a crack then it's come loose. It works better on the rear x member than the front because of the angle.
Now how do those stud extractors work?

When in doubt, crank the oxy torch out!
