    Transmission oil

    G'day all,
I have a D2 TD5 auto. Why can't I get to the transmission oil to check it's level or to top up. Is it only touched during a service by the mechanics. And if so, do you know why. Cheers.

    You can.
There is a filler plug on the front to check, and the procedure is in RAVE. It's just that you have to get dirtier now.

AFAIK, the deletion of the dipstick was because the EEC mandated that auto transmission fluid should be "lifetime" so not changed.

... but the service spec' shows auto transmission fluid changes every 40,000K !

On the D3 & later, "lifetime" was the go, but not on the D2.

Maybe because the auto transmission isn't made by Land Rover, the notion is that it WON'T leak oil between services, therefore no need for a dipstick !
