    Sudden momentary loss of power...an unusual one?!

    Evening all!

    Just wondering if any D2 owners have experienced this, and can give me a hint or two as to what the issue could be...

    I just pulled out of a car park close to home. As I pulled onto the road and went to accelerate, there was a sudden loss of power (1-2 seconds), almost as if the brakes had been applied or the ABS had kicked in, but with no warning lights flashing and without the usual braking 'sensation'. It happened in a Bunnings car park at the weekend, too. I was parked on a patch of rutted, hard-packed dirt and as I pulled away, same thing.

    Hard to describe, but if I could try to describe it, I would say it was as though, for a split second, I'm attached by a winch cable to the vehicle behind me and suddenly, the winch spools out, releasing the vehicle. Not much of an analogy, sorry!

    So you are not describing turbo lag? Could it be a lack of boost pressure? I've had on 3 occasions where I'd describe my car as not having boost pressure and therefore having no acceleration or power. But that is different to what you are describing?

    Hey Jazzman,

    It could well be...I've never experienced it, but it fits with the profile, also.

    What are the main causes, and what can be done to stop it? My old TDi never did it, it's only happened with the TD5...

    My problem was reset but turning the engine off and on again. I think mine was the engine limiting the boost or a sticking waste gate. I have to admit I had adjusted the boost up when it happened the first 2 times. The 3rd time I can't explain as I had turned the boost back by then.
    Just simply because it is easy maybe clean the MAF to see if it helps.


    Hopefully someone with more experience with this kind of issue can give you a more definitive response.

    Thanks for your help and input anyway, mate. I had planned to clean the MAF anyway, so I'll try that, then aim for the waste gate.

    I would also trace the wires from the MAF,particularly at the LH front of the head, as they are known to rub through there.
    While at the cleaning, I would also clean the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold.

    I had the same symptoms just before my crank sensor died. Might be worth carrying a spare just in case.

    I had a chat with my Landy mechanic today and he ruled out the crank sensor, but suggested a 'flat spot' (I hadn't thought along those lines) and steered me toward the MAF and the inlet temperature sensor. I bought a can of contact cleaner from Bunnings and removed the MAF. This wasn't too bad at all, but the temperature sensor was absolutely clogged up and minging!

    I treated both to a liberal squirt with contact cleaner, and replaced them, once dry. I'll give the Disco a good run tomorrow and see how it fairs.

    Hello,
    Have you had it on a Nanocom or similar looking for faults mine does this time to time and it is a "Driver demand error " both logged high and low, which means the TPS, while here in London I will get a new one before returning to Perth.
