    My brother is thinking of possibly buying a D2

    Hi guys,
    Regular from the D3/D4/RRS forum stopping in!


    My brother has recently joined the army as a cavalryman driving Bushmaster ATVs and has lately been getting more interested in travelling. He has been looking for another vehicle for months now and I suggested to him at some point that he look at a Disco 2, as I thought it had a lot going for it - nice interior, good equipment, loads of space and a decent drive for a 4wd on road, plus of course legendary off road performance. That aside, I literally know nothing about the D2. I have owned a 2008 RRS TDV6 for 60K and that has been all in all an excellent and very well engineered vehicle.


    I romanticised the idea of all us guys going on big 4x4 adventures and it may have sunk in a bit as he has started looking at D2's on carsales.


    He's also cottoned onto the likes of landroverhell.com etc, which we've probably all seen/grown tired of.


    I started this to try to get an idea of what he could realistically expect from owning a D2 - I'd love to hear from all owners V8s and TD5's. What do you think of your car? How has it been in terms of reliability? Common problems?

    Great car with a few well documented points that need attention, most small and low cost and you have a fantastic multi use vehicle.

    I would recommend a TD5 to only the right type of person - ie likes tinkering /a DIY type.

    I would recommend a td5 excellent to drive good economy and like any vehicle reliable when maintained properly
    have a good one :D ken :wasntme:

    Me too, TD5, mine has well over 400,000 klicks and motor, suspension, body etc all great. It had done one hell of a lot of towing before I got it, tow hitch pin substantially worn and hitch almost impossible to pull out because of the splayed out metal around the hitch pin, because of the obviously heavy towing I have had to replace the auto trans but I wouldn't have any other vehicle.

    D2, all the things you stated, comfort yet capable. With a Td5 range, fuel economy and towing ability are all acceptable. I don't know about needing to be a tinkerer or DIYer, I pay my mechanic to maintain my vehicle.

    They are more than affordable when compared to other equally capable 4X4s.

    Some on here have got low mileage Td5s for low teen and less than $10k, worst you could expect are head related issues, gasket due to a loss in clamping force/plastic dowels also blamed, three amigos, auto gearbox rebuilds. A big smile from the off road performance and on road comfort are the other things you could expect.

    Can't be v8 sound, grunt and value, when on lpg injected its unbeatable unless regularly doing extended travel out west where lpg not available, then Td would be cheaper to run. Cheers

    Where does the LPG tank fit - in the boot or does it replace the petrol tank?

    Thanks a lot for the responses - he's not a real tinkerer - I am though - so no doubt whatever car he ends up getting, I'll be doing a lot of work on over the time he has it.


    Most of the cars I've owned have copped very bad raps for reliability, and yet I've clocked up many hundreds of thousands of km in them and have found them to be reliable when maintained properly and sometimes proactively.


    Even the newer LRs have foibles that can turn catastrophic if not tended to - ie, the oil pump on TDV6's.


    I assumed this was the case for earlier Discos where a few issues that once addressed, leave you with a reliable tourer.

    mine are in the boot, just take up about 20cm of space.

    TD5's the go.

    Nothing beats diesel. They just don't give up. The D2 is a great vehicle and fantastic value, a lot of fun but like the others have said, look after it. Were a strange breed, we love our Land Rovers warts and all. Their not for everyone but we don't want them to be. Keep the services up and he'll be right. Cheers.
