Economy & cruising speed TD5 Disco

My 03 D2a is my daily driver as well as my toy. I run bullbar, winch, snorkel, lockers and 32" muddies. I'v travelled about 26k (mixture of country/city)over the last 6 months and generally carry about 3-400kg of stock in the back as well as a fridge.

I cruise at the speed limits, mostly with cruise control.

My average fuel economy has been 10.9ltr/100. I don't know of any other 4wd carrying load constantly as mine is that can match this economy except maybe a few of the latest dual cabs such as VW Amarok. Certainly nothing of similar vintage.

This is great around town getting 850 k's to a tank,on the Hwy quite a bit more sitting on 110k engine is 2300 rpm boost is 20psi, EGT's sitting about 370-400c . I also have the Ashcroft Hd TC and VNT with a great TD5 Inside remap.

I agree with Dougal on both counts, seems a bit low when cruising and way to high when going up hills, cruising should be around the 500 mark and going up hills, depending on gradient, around the 650 to 700 no matter what the weather, I'd recommend going off the cruise when going up hills to prevent the EGTs going over 700, also I would have thought just the Diesel/Gas would have been enough for extra power, I'd say the re-map is what's causing your high EGTs, if you haven't got a larger intercooler, I'd suggest you get one, this should help with the high EGTs also, boost is about right.

Similar set-up to mine though my tyres are 31.5's and I have a roof rack but probably carry less load and I could only dream of those figures!

I even try to drive conservatively and can only get an average 15.4L per 100km!

Wish I could work out what was wrong with mine! Unless it is down to the auto gearbox.

With non-standard tyres, can you guys be sure of your Litres-per-100ks figures?
If you've re-calibrated your odometer, or (probably less simple, although I haven't tried either) checked all your travel with gps logging, you'll be ok, otherwise, each time you thought you travelled a kilometre, your 31+ or 32" tyres have actually taken you quite a bit further, so things might not be quite as bad as they seem.

I do it on a flat road with no gradient by waiting until the odometer rolls over 1/10 and then looking at the GPS distance, then checking after 10KM on the GPS.
My odometer is out 5% with 255x70.16 tyres .

The three tanks I've done since fitting 32" (with re-calibrated speedo)
Have returned 9.5l/100 or less (one tank was 9.26)
That's not even highway driving, it's the 20 min trip to Uni or work 6days a week
(Which isn't stop start, but it's not highway driving either.

Plus I have zero extra weight in the car(besides my fat arse)

Fast freddy, my tyres put my speedo and odometer out exactly 9% compared to gps and speed measuring equipment, and I always take this into account to make the economy look the best it can.:)

I too find that the 90-100kph range is a good speed with "The Castle" in tow (fully loaded is 1.8t), for the same reasons of avoiding trans unlock. If the hills are steep I drop back to third before the speed drops below 80 kph. Ditto not using cruise while towing.

As to towing economy Charlie is bog standard. Generally I get low 15's per100km with a best of low 13's. Normal consumption around town is low mid 11/100km.
