Economy & cruising speed TD5 Disco

My average fuel use is 13.5 l/100k, that is running on both diesel and gas.

I don't get around to filling after each sort of trip so that includes towing a 2.5 tonne caravan, city driving and slow bush tracks, of course home is in the hills so little of it is on the flat.

What I find when on the open road, is that setting the cruise control to 90k I get the easiest ride. Any slower (80) and when coming to a rise the trans kicks out the lock up clutch to gain speed, at 90 there is enough torque for the TC to stay locked, I figure any or much faster the air drag is also going to upset the economy.

Just wondering what others cruise at on the open road.

My Disco is running std tyres, but a bull bar, winch and the weight of gas cylinders.

Unless the conditions are horrendous the economy doesn't seem to vary much despite the load. The fitting of a better lower stall speed lock up TC didn't make any difference to the economy.

    Cheers

    Hello,
Which gas system do you have on your car?? I have a Diesel Gas Australia and have had it adjusted to max power, it starts at 1500 rpm then at 2000 rpm max gas flat the regulator is wound all the way out and then it decreases to zero at 3500 rpm. The last Gas map was pretty crap just a steady increase didn't make much difference.
This is great around town getting 850 k's to a tank,on the Hwy quite a bit more sitting on 110k engine is 2300 rpm boost is 20psi, EGT's sitting about 370-400c . I also have the Ashcroft Hd TC and VNT with a great TD5 Inside remap.

The gas system was on the car when I got it, it is DGas system, think they're gone to the states now.

They insisted that the gas go into the system after the turbo, safety I think on that one. Well, no gas was being used, I used to be a licenced gas fitter so I did some checking around, found out how to check it, all seemed all right but no gas was being used, then I checked the pressures, 18lb turbo 7.5 gas, the turbo pressure was blowing the gas backwards.

I fitted the gas feed pre turbo and it worked but how much and when I haven't a clue.

    Regards

Your egt measurements sound too low. How long is the probe and where is it fitted?

    Hello,
I have the probe right in the center of the manifold where they all join before the turbo, it goes down to about the center of the pipe, on hills this changes very quickly goes up very quickly. Under hard acceleration can go up past 900 C in the summer. Been running like this for a couple of years no problems.

I just have a standard D2a TD5 and between 90 and 100km/hr it seems comfortable and working fine, not labouring and not working too hard either.
comfortable on long flat drives where one has time to do that speed

The cruise control is so aggressive that it will go full throttle on any rise and drop out of lock.
However if you dont use cruise it will stay locked down to 70 kmh with about up to half throttle so you can drive at 80 if you wish but not in cruise.

When I am towing I don't use cruise except on the dead flat, but I get 12 l per 100 at 100kmh towing a700 kg camper trailer, but that is letting speed decay on hills by holding the accelerator where it retains lock up.

With or without trailer I cruise up to 110 and the car is happy and does about 11 without and 12-12.5 with . Car is D 2 2002 EU3 auto, no bull bars or roof rack , stock as a rock, but 30.5 tyres.

Last trip I did from Gold coast to Noosa, fully fully loaded with the roof racks full too. Cars standard except the bull bar, 03 td5 auto. set the cruise to 105, just turning it off for the upcoming hills to stop it kicking down and then letting the speed scrub off slowly. got 10.7l/100km. though that was pretty good.
