It won't lockup in 1 or 2 low range under forward motion (or 3 or 4), but it will lockup under over-run going down hill ... Foot off the gas, let the vehicle run away down hill in say 1L and when the over-run engine revs (driven by the auto box) hits about 2000rpm, THEN the TC will lockup to provide engine braking for downhill descents. Works very well.
If you use Manual/Sport mode in low range, the auto will hold whatever gear you select regardless of your ground speed, except for getting off the line. If you leave the stick at 3, as you pull away the box will go a real short squirt of 1st then straight to 3rd and stay there .... It's like a clutchless manual gearbox when in this mode (in low range)
