Check the fuse for your rear brake lights

If it comes on only when you hit the brakes then it's F25 interior fusebox blown, if the fuse is good and the light comes on randomly while driving regardless of brakes it means the diff'lock switch makes tricks ... that switch a very poor design on the early modells

yeah it comes on randomly, does this mean CDL engages or just the faulty switch flashing light?
I'd like to do the CDL conversion when I have some $$

    Flickering

I agree 100% with Fery not a great design of switch,
The original switch has two terminals that are riveted on with vibrations and connections being in an difficult place to access the little rivet slacken and detach, the terminals are not well supported so can also bend.

A couple of fixes are use later style Lucas switch, or pot the bottom of terminals with epoxy resin this will give better support to pins just put tape round the hex to form a dam then pour in epoxy, just enough to cover the pins so it still has good connection on the terminals.

Flickering light does not mean CDL engaged just that the circuit is getting an earth to cause the light to illuminate.
Switches are cheap and if you are fitting CDL lever its easy to access from the top as you need to remove the cover from transmission tunnel to fit the linkage.
It can be done from underneath the car but you have to do it by touch.
