    Which shock absorbers to buy

I am thinking of buying new shockers for my TD5.
I looked at Ranchos the same as I have had in my J20 Jeep for the last eigthteen years without trouble. The back ones are adjustable on the jeep and I like that idea as I am mostly on road or occasional dirt track.
I like a fairly soft ride on road .(I have SLS) too.
The trouble is a full set of Ranchos is $800.00.
I see a lot of much cheaper non adjustable stuff out there But I was wondering if I will get a harsh ride that I hate.
Anyone got any ideas on a cheaper but good adjustable shocker or other solultion? Or are the Ranchos worth the price?
    Regards, Nick.

The eternal question ... Which aftermarket shock is right for a D2 with an SLS rear ?

I know there will be shocks that fit ... but won't give the required control.

D2a with SLS * factory shocks length

    Fr closed 370mm / open 580mm

    Rr closed 360mm / open 570mm

    Damper closed 393mm / open 653mm

I couldn't find anyone that would tell me that their brand of shock would give the same ride quality as standard shocks,I went with standard,Make sure they are for SLS and if you have ace.

I am also looking at new shocks for both front and rear. I still have the original ones on it. They are completely gone so am now bouncing on springs.

I have seen FOX shocks online. but am not sure about these.

I have these and they give a good ride and good control on dirt.
They have been around OZ including the GRR and still seem OK.
They are pretty unobtrusive and that is how I like it.

Gas-Magnum TDT - Monroe Shock Absorbers

Oh and they are pretty cheap too, and not just some Chinese or Brazilian Shock rebranded and doubled in price.

Had TJM XGS on the D1 and they did a good jobs over bad roads for a decade.

Had TJM XGS on the defender, 3 sets of them, first set did over 100000kms all sorts of roads, 2nd set did about 60000km, same usage, last set only did 40000 and they were really shot by then. So my take is the quality has declined, backed by a few other people I talk to with cruisers. Currently on RAWs on the defer, backs are sus, front good about 60000km so far.
The TD5 disco had Monroe magnums when I got it, they were new, After 40000 kms of dirt and bitumen they were very 2nd hand. Went with Bilsteins now 10000 so far and seem oki, handling is far above the Monroes on dirt and tar.
IMO the cheaper knockoffs, Terraf, and the like are what they are, a cheaper alternative , better than the old shot 1s but not a long term proposition .

Bilstein, Or original LR replacement ones as they seem to be very decent quality ex factory.

I have to note that I had Billys on my RRC.

The rears were irretrievably damaged by about 30KK by stones hitting the single tube, even though I had fitted stone guards.

My conclusion is Billys OK for front if you have the cash , but twin tubes on the back.
That is why I bought cheaper shocks the next time around.

If you can afford Konis, they are the pick IMHO. My camper trailer had a set on for 17 years , but one had gone soft so I tried to have them rebuilt but the foot valve in one was damaged by bottoming, even though my camper has bump stops. The PO must have hit one very large bump.

However I bought new ones and they are great IMHO.

I think you will find that if that damage took out a Bilstein, it will have more than taken out any twin shell. Twin shells are not as strong in the body, its like comparing 2 layers of coke can to a single layer of steam pipe.
    Cheers
