Hi folks, I'm a new member after sitting on the sidelines for some time. I have a Disco 2a V8 that's about to cost me some decent money - engine's on it's way out. The rest of the car is in pretty good nick. So options are:
1. Suck it up and spend the money (thousands).
2. Import a re manufactured 4.6. (Even more thousands but significantly better performance)
3. Swap the whole car for a Deisel. Would prefer the Deisel (economy, performance when fiddled) but concerned about buying someone else's problems.
I'd really appreciate some thoughts form those who have undoubtedly been in the same boat?

Sad but true loanrangie. fuxing the v8 seems like tearing money up.
I was faced with similar a few years ago.
If you are going to get a diesel anyway, you're far better off putting the money into the diesel. Spending money on a new or reco V8 will not increase the value of the Disco by the value of the V8.
Me? I had a crappy old series on a RRC chassis. I spent a lot of money having the engine rebuilt. It is still a crappy old series on a RRC chassis. I am happy with that.
If you are happy with your Disco 2, source another motor. You might get lucky with a s/h one but you will have greater success rebuilding yours or importing the 4.6.
Go new! it would have a warrenty...
You have not said what is the issue but assuming its knocking or overheated, I'd go for a referb kit from the UK for example.
If the rest of the car is okay, then that would be the most cost effective path if you intend to carry on using it. At the very least you know your own cars shortcomings rather than buying some ones elses problem.

Coolant leaking from pumps and heads, causing irregular overheating with all the lovely things that does to alluminium heads. Once the heads are taken off likely slipped liners and further surgery required. Urgh.
I was certainly from the "better to spend money fixing problems you're aware of rather than buying someone else's unknown problems" school of thought.
The thing keeping me from surgery is, let's face it, a lot of petrol in, for not a lot of torque out.
Given I'll hang onto the car for quite some time, think I'll swap it for a Deisel.

Keep an eye on the hail damage auctions in brissie for low cost disco v8s may be an option? Swap the engines and on sell / wreck? Still run the risk of buying a second hand engine though....
Had the same issue / dilemma with my D1, went down the road with my heart not my head, now I have a 4.6 ridge lined and balanced, high torque cam adjustable twin row timing chain and performance ignition. Engine is great but cost way to much for a relatively gutless and thirsty POS.
Never again, upgrade to a D3 for a couple of thou more....
Do reco. The v8 is a great motor. As long as the rest of it is sound. These trucks are worth so much more to own and drive than market value...love em
Just rebuild the bent 8 do sequential gas injection and get heaps more grunt for less running cost.
