from an engine perspective, im not a td5 expert but i read on this forum that they can last over 400,000km if looked after.

I think you have answered your own question.
I am not an expert having only done 35KK of the 167Kk on my odometer, but it seems to me that the basic engine is reliable if you don't ask more of it than it was designed to do.

Most engines of any type die these days from lack of maintenance be it not changing oil, coolant, or radiator hoses, and the special TD5 problem of the oil pump bolt . I am often struck by the evidnece of complete neglect shown with problem posts, the most recent being the flange on a water pump bracket which showed evidence of extreme corrosion which is nearly always the result of not changing coolant before it loses its anti corrosion properties.
If you remap it to the max and up the boost and let it get hot EGTs , then of course it will not last as long as an engine which is run within its design parameters.

But why do you ask? are you thinking you are running out of luck at 280KK? The SRS problem is most likely to be the coil in the steering column, which should not be too hard to fix.

A car at 10 years plus and 280Kk is almost certain to give many minor problems as all of the bits have exceeded their design life, but as long as you engine doesn't make or use oil, the auto is well serviced and doesn't do strange things, and you can live with the annoyances of bits like window winders giving up , then keep the car.

I think some people are short changing their self 400,00km from a diesel that is looked after Id expect a lot more than that from a diesel that is maintained correctly

I have read about a few TD5's making the 1 Million KM.

One was a defender (courier duties before he bought it) and still goes fine..

So as they say look after it and it will look after you.

If your transmission hasn't failed yet, it is in the zone of doing so.
I replaced the airbags at 150k, I'm now 302k still no issues.
Echo on the maintenance suggestions.

I haven't heard of this being an issue (but that don't mean nuthin!!). Is this on automatics or manuals?
