Dustproofing the rear door latch mechainism

I've read many threads about people having problems with the latch mechanism on the rear door of their D2s getting clogged with dust and not working.

I don't want this to happen to me so I am looking to find a way to prevent the dust from getting in in the first place.

As far as I can see, the reason the mechanism gets clogged is because there is no seal between it and the outside world and I''m guessing that most of the dust that gets in does so via the gap between the door and the bodywork.

Has anyone tried sealing the gap with some pinch weld rubber seal or anything? How effective was it? Are there any other sources of dust ingress (eg. through the door handle)?

    Thanks in advance!

I have had no problem so far with mine but I never use grease.
I only lub with silicone drilube.
Have done GRR etc no problem.
So I think the problem may be gunned up grease.

Mine has let me down quite a few times on dusty trips. There is nothing worse than flipping the handle repeatedly until it suddenly decides to work.

The other annoyance has been having to really slam the door shut.

I took mine out over the weekend. It was caked in red dust. I looked like a Patek Phillipe that had been dipped in bauxite.

I blasted most of the dust off with the compressor, then cleaned it with WD40. This dissolved a whole lot more dust and I blasted it all again and re-installed.

What a transformation? It feels silky smooth like a new car. Minimal effort is required to close the door too.

It isn't immediately obvious how the dust gets into the door cavity, but its full of it.

I've had mine out a couple of times now , but I go into the red dust at least twice a year.

you get used to these things......its probably easier to regularly maintain it than it is to try to prevent the dust ingress.

hint....clean it well, keep it dry.....a good lock drylube is the thing.....as Roberto said cleaned up its like new.

the whole d2 works like this.....

Mines stuck a few times but never after regular maintenance in-situ with a 3 step process:

    1. Clean with inox spray.
    2. Lube with DuPont dry wax Teflon spray
    3. Dust with graphite!

Repeat when it looks dusty again.
    Cheers

Mine has had problems with the rear door hinge as well, filling up with red dust. Difficult to prevent. So even when you have managed to get the handle to function, the door still won't open.
