    Missing Plug in TD5

On return from a couple of hundred KM trip I noticed and oily smell. On investigation I found the engine bay and under the car covered in engine oil. I found the place it was coming from. (See Picture) It was at the top front of the TD5, it looks like a plug or something is missing. There was also a little bit of smoke or mist wafting from the hole.

Does anyone know why this hole is now open and besides the oil everywhere could it have caused any damage.

Also what is this part called and where can I get it in Melbourne.

    Thanks.

I would look into the health of the motor, fair chance its excessive blow by pressure that removed it.

This is the sort of thing I was afraid of. The motor has 320 on it and has shown no signs of any issue until now. What would be the likely cause and what sort of checks can I do.
    Cheers, David.

Replace the depression controll(crankcase breather) valve(LLN100140L) to rule it out... if you know it's old it's a good move to replace it anyway cos it wears out in time due to hot crankcase gasses and it mixes up the management a bit but if it's sticking closed the pressure will rise in the cam

I wouldn't read too much into it falling out regarding blowby. The wiring loom on the front will usually catch it.LOL.

Mine was so loose at 135Kk when I bought it that there was oil all over the engine and had stuffed the alternator.
I fitted a new one and at 167KK it is loose again, and I just stopped it up with instant gasket.
I have now bought some Viton Orings and when I can be bothered I will replace the Oring.

Agree with PhilipA. RAVE describes the plug as " Camshaft bore end cap/camshaft sprocket access plug ", it's there so you can access the 3 bolts holding the camshaft sprocket to the camshaft. A simple test for blowback, when you have the new cap & seal in, is remove the oil filler cap , bad blowback you will see an oily mist coming out of the cap orifice. OR, place your palm over the orifice, there should be no pressure. Carrying extra "O " ring seals is a good idea. [ or even an extra cap]. Bob

Thanks guys for the info. I won't panic just yet. I went and saw Graham at British Car Care and a plug is coming in tomorrow. I'll fit it and give it a good clean up then re assess.
    Cheers, David.

I'm worried now because I've done the clean and replacement. But also leaking oil from the breather hose fitting on top of the engine. Don't won't to hijack your thread so I've started my own. If anyone has any input please let me know under my thread.
