    roof top rack systems

Hi im in the market for a roof top rack for obviously carrying things but im wondering if anyone can tell me what the maximum load the manufacturer has recommended for these things. Im worried that if I go and get the one I like it may be heavier than the more exspencive alloy brands therefor meaning ill be almost exceeding the max load limit from the cars manufacturer and would be limited as to what I can carry up there

not much, buy the time you put a roof rack on it and a couple of items.

    quote from above link [
This was the subject of a protracted and heated argument between myself and LRA - the 50kg/30kg limit applies to gutter mounted roof racks according to LRA. Which basically means by the time you've put the rack up there you can carry a couple of bags of sugar and that's it ]

What THEY say and what WE do are two different things ...

    3 x Rhino HD bars 17kg
1 x Rhino 2m AT alloy tray with sides (3 mount version) 21Kg
    1 x Fittings tray to bars 3kg
    1 x Foxwing awning 23kg
    3 x Foxwing mounts 4kg
    2 x Rhino shoval mounts + 1 x f/glass handled shovel 3kg
    TOTAL = 71kg

... and that's permanently mount on the D2 roof.

    Then add an RV5 22kg
A small Rhino canvas bag with a double height queen airbed, single air bed, 3x sleeping bags, 2 sheets .... and the side walls kit, front wall kit, fly kit, 2 Oztenet king chairs, and a 3rd small alloy folding chair ... and sometimes a chainsaw carry box with saw, fuel oil, tools, spare chains ...

That's over 100kg. 5 years and no problems travelling like this. I just remind my self there's an extra 100kg passenger on the roof and drive accordingly !!

We now have the kamper so usually no load on the roof except the bars/tray/wing ... moved required stuff into kamper.

    Smile East Coast bullbars ECB

    image.jpgHi
I bought a 2nd hand alloy ECB rack from a D1 on eBay for about $300 and It fitted. I put shade cloth 2 layers of 95% secured by cable ties and it is a great tropical roof. Am going to add a large solar panel for aux battery. It also fits the radio aerial which folds down when not in use. May put a couple of flood lights there too. Rack is powder coated alloy hammer coated. Just remember to tell wife clearance is now 2.2 not 2.0
As with all things esp off-road you can carry a lot of weight IF you drive accordingly. I have heard the 35kg rule. Remember it is a long long way from the centre of gravity. We carry bikes crab traps foam mattresses kit bags light chairs etc up top rather than full 20 litre fuel and water cans batteries gas bottles like some lunatics. Remember in a collision these things become missiles. Enjoy and hope this helps
