    D2 Coolant change?

    Hi all.

Just picked up my first ever Rover! An 03 Disco 2 TD5! Engine runs well but I cant see anything in the expansion tank apart from staining from orange coolant. With all the horror stories relating to overheating I am nervous. According to service records coolant was flushed 15 months ago. I dont know what coolant was used (obviously I think it was orange). So, should I change coolant? If I do change do I need to change thermostat? Can I top up with a red coolant? (Nulon)

Thanks so much for any advice - I hope it is an easy answer!

    Aaron

Welcome to the forum, lots of good information here.

The trick with the coolant is to use the same one all the time otherwise you may find a chemical reaction occurring between any remaining old and new coolant that can eventually damage your radiator.

I'd be emptying the coolant, flushing the system and replacing the coolant with one that is suitable for your engine. (Owners manual should have the details on what type of coolant).

The other concern is why is there no coolant in the expansion tank. Even with the motor cold I would have expected some in there.

Also, if you're concerned about overheating due to lack of coolant you should consider purchasing an Engine Saver. You can buy them from the Shop in the forum. They really are great devices and easy to install.

Hey thanks mate! Also, what about the thermostat? I have read conflicting ideas as to whether it should be replaced with the change or not.

    Hi Aaron,

Given that you have recently acquired the D2 I'd be checking parts/consumables - oils, fluids, hoses, etc. The thermostat being one of these. So if you have any doubts about the thermostat working properly then consider replacing it.

Unless you know the brand of the current coolant don't top it up with another brand
Can create very expensive issues. Flush and replace especially as car is new to you.

    coolant

You should have had OAT coolant in your TD5.It is a red/pink colour.

Having said that I had green coolant in mine and I changed back to the red OAT ( organic) coolant.
You should be able to see the coolant in your tank at any time , engine on or off.
I would just top up with water for now until you get better acquainted with your car. If you do not top up you will , of course cook your donk.
    Welcome to this awesome forum.
You will find it a mine of helpful advice and friendly people.
    Regards, Nick.

Agree with worane , also top up with rainwater or distilled water , follow bleed procedure , take note of how much it takes , keep your eye on the level and look for any stains around hoses .Common leaks are fuel cooler , drain plug , radiator , little hose to oil cooler behind turbo, but check all over. By doing this you should be able to find/rectify leak , then flush /change thermostat if in doubt and fill with oat coolant

If u replace ur thermostat, USE A GENUINE ONE!!!

I replaced mine in my D2 just after I bought it, thinking I was doing the right thing. And used a non genuine item as suggested by LR workshop.

It failed, and could of been the end of my engine, luckily the TD5 cooling system is quite efficient.

I replaced it again with a genuine item, and actually went for a cooler temp version.
