Thread: Removal of sludge

Wow!
In my experience sludge in RV8s is always black.
If it is orange/red I would have to guess that it has coolant in it.
I wonder if the inlet manifold was a bit loose and coolant was getting into the valley and then condensing in teh rocker covers.

Hi mate,

You might be right on the money.

I've had a coolant leak for a long time from an inland manifold.

Behind the air condenser, there is a small pipe coming out on the top of the manifold.

It got to the point that it had to be replaced, at the moment I am doing it all.

Then again what I read is if the car is driver short distances all the time this sludge build happens too.

We bought disco to in 2006 with 90k, 9 years later misses only did 30 k

I think oil should be changed once a year and not every 3 years . 10 000 km like in our case.

Either way I will get some engine flush and get it cleaned and change coolant and that leak.

I concur with Phillip, red /orange is likely to be coolant. Is there also this sludge on the underside of the oil filler cap, that;s usualy the coolant evaporating and sticking to thre underside of the cap.

Thank you for your input.

I think I know the reasons for this.

1st- car has been driven only short trips and in last 9 years did bugger all km, 30 000 in total.

Now oil was changed every 3 years, I know not a good idea but...

I am sure the oil sludge developed a bit due to this.

2nd - car had no leaks other then the one I am trying to fix at the moment. Upper inland manifold steam tube corroded away and it was leaking.


Now the reason why it corroded away is because correct coolant was not used, as a matter of fact when the system was flushed it had more water in it the system than coolant

What I came across is that water in a cooling system will evaporate more than coolant, so along those lines, yes that must be the reason why it is that colour.

At this stage good engine flush and coolant flush is due.

The only good reason to use OAT on a V8 is the length of time between services on it.
The RV8 is an all alloy engine and doesnt need the rest of the OAT mixed metal qualities.


and you wont be forever chasing pink coolant leaks
