    Battery/Wiring problem - 03 Disco 2 TD5 in a coma

    Hi all,

having a lot of trouble with my 03 Disco 2 TD5.

Last night, while adding de-mineralised water to the coolant expansion tank I spilled a little around the back of the tank on whatever loom is on the other side of that. Also a little splash went near the fuse box. Now I am having some SERIOUS issues. I tried the car immediately after and it failed to start, and I now have the three amigos. I used to be able to hear the fuel pump quite loudly, now it is whisper quiet. I can hear the starter firing rapidly but nothing happens - I guess no fuel in the lines. Sometimes when I try and start it the alarm goes off. I have done my best to dry up all the cables the water may have spilled on, to no avail. In fact, today when I tried to start it the dash lights aren't even illuminating - completely dead, as if the battery were gone. However, I can hear some sort of bizarre humming sound from the ABS area when the key is completely out of the car.

Where should I go from here? It seems more like a wiring problem to me - and not a battery/fuel pump problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys.

    X2 for battery related.
Check the terminals are clean and tight as well as voltage.
The earth lead bolts to the body near the battery and to the motor near the alternator, check they are tight also.
It sounds more than the usual dreaded stater solenoid contacts.

I would not think a small amount of splashed water would hurt the electrics.
    Cheers, Kyle

Hey thanks for the quick replies all.

Had a little squizz around the engine bay and Bbattery terminals are tight and seem okay. As for the grounding wires - I am having a little difficulty locating them. Does the ground that terminates near the battery sit on a little metal rack with other grounds? I can't see the ground near the motor at all. Does it ground onto the motor itself?

    Cheers.

A thought - I had the centre console off yesterday to tighten handbrake (which I have since learned is not the correct procedure on an 03) and had to unplug cigarette lighter, door lock button, windows etc. If I have accidentally not put one of these back in properly could it cause these problems?

you're jumping all over the place.
you're looking for a miracle solution such as the "make it work" switch being turned off
you need to focus on the battery, as your original post contains all the details to start diagnosis and im pretty sure, the solution.

    Yeah I am, sorry mate.

I will stick a multimeter on it tomorrow and see how it looks.

The load of the door open (light), radio etc as you worked on the vehicle is likely to have been sufficient to collapse the battery if sufficiently old...
