    Td5 flywheel.

Wondering if anyone knows how many recesses there are in a Td5 flywheel for the timing pin?

I'm pretty sure there is only one. I was under the car looking though the round access hole to unbolt the torque converter from the engine and i noticed there is a round hole in the flywheel that matched up with the threaded hole (Approx M12) to the drivers side of the access hole.

I lined these up as I did not have a bolt to put in to secure the engine. When I removed the engine to rebuild it my engine was on TDC.

My flywheel is out but i'm not near it currently. I'll have a look for you next time i'm there, probably tomorrow afternoon.

And can the flywheel only be installed in one position? I seem to remember there being a locating dowel.

I ask this because after I did the head gasket, I had to do the clutch.

I didn't have timing pins at that point so just put a drill bit in the can slot. Then removed the head, stripped it for skimming and new seals. I then put it all back together in reverse order with the drill bit in the can slot.

Some time later I had to do the clutch. It has run a bit rough of late so I thought I would check the timing.

Neither of the 2 pins will line up and are out by a fair way. Will I have to pull the head to get them to line up as the valves will hit the piston if I turn it over by hand?

    Regards

    Will

Come to think of it mine is auto. So i don't have a flywheel, i have a ring gear and flex plate.

I'd ask Discorevvy. He knows a lot about this stuff.

When I fitted the flywheel to my RRC 3.5lt V8 the holes only lined up one way, but that is a completely different motor.

Hi Will , yep there is a dowel so flywheel can only go one way , Pin as well , has it been running bad since you did head gasket ? What are the symptoms? . If it runs at all then you shouldn't bend a valve setting it up , you dont have to take the head off , don't forget you may have to go round twice to get the cam to line up

    You all have flywheels.
If it was running it can't be far out, you do not have to pull the head, so line up the engine to get the camshaft locking pin in place, slacken the three camshaft bolts and carefully adjust the flywheel a little until the timing pin can be fitted. Make sure that their is no slack on the passenger side of the timing chain and tighten the three bolts to the recommended torque. Discovery is good on this and there is a good recent post.

Sorted. Forgot about having to go round twice.

    IDIOT!

Just finished and started fine. The belt tensioner is still bouncing like a 4yo at a wiggles concert. Might have a look at the harmonic balancer.

    Thanks again guys.

It is a Ross balancer less than 18 months old by the way.

    And the tensioner is new.
    So is the ACE pump.
The idler pulley bearing is newish too.
