    auto transmission

Today, was driving like normal then a couple of noises (like a possum it the roof) from under the middle console/under the climate controle. When i got out noticed a hot smell and thermo fan running (which I've never heard before) had a look under to find a oil leak.. thinking low auto transmission oil hence the new oil leak? also noticed high/low selector very stiff. Car parked, scared to drive!
Thinking get under check oil level of trans and get to the shop.. anything else it could be?

How mush oil was leaking? What colour was the oil? Auto fluid is red. Transfer case oil is brown just like engine oil.

So ended getting the d2a up on my cousins new hoist (very handy little unit), to find nothing major under neath the car just a very minor rear main seal leak. Transfer case not leaking, awesome! but oil was low.
Back in the engine bay found an oil leak right at the back of the rocker cover, sweet easy fix.
Also after further inspection in the engine bay determined that the coolant leak was from the radiator expansion tank cap failing, new cap ordered, sweet another easy fix.
All was going better than expected, so decided to try and deal with the old M and S lights, had already looked at all the other possibilities other than the gear/inhibitor switch or XYZ (it was the newer switch with just the metal fingers). So out she came, pulled apart but no water damage just some fine dust/dirt that had looked to come in through the selector arm and turned into a kind of mud with the lube that was in there.. cleaned it out, silicon'd it back together and put her back in her place.

That's where everything went pear shaped. Car wouldn't start, M and S lights constantly flashing, when turning the key he headlight washers and fog lights were coming on for a second what had we done

After checking the position of the gear leaver, the switch its self, readjusting and the car going up and down on the hoist for nearly two hours we finally noticed that the locator arm was out by less than a mm.

Readjust and all was sweet, happydays
