Torque converter lock up is random in 4th

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

So because it only costs $66 for a diagnosis I took it off to get checked.

The testing shows that the soleniods are all working at the right times and the TCC, torque converter clutch simply isn't responding to the solenoid swtiching.

The ATF was checked and it's not the best, considering it was changed only 4 weeks back.

Indications are that it's something internal.

Having read that the autos have a general life of 240k kms or so, then at 290k kms with an unknown life, I'm not really left with much option than to consider a rebuild.

Not a cheap option, but then that's the cost of older cars I guess.

I'm just not sure spending the money on this D2 is the right thing, but after a head rebuild and nearly anything else that needs replacing being replaced, I'm struggling to find a reason to back out now. Oh well as they say.... :censored::censored::censored:

Ahh,but really when you sit and do the sums, what sort of new vechile would you get for 3-4000? 5 if a really bad scenario. If I had a dollar for all the times some1 changed cars because of a problem and then 6mths later said , I wished Id kept the old 1! I would drive a rangie:D

Yeah, therein lies my pain and justification. :(

There's a bit of rust in a really odd place. So I need to get that looked at next and I reckon that it's about done in terms of major items.

You really need to consider doing the thermostat if its not working otherwise next major item may be your engine.
It is a very small outlay compared to a trans rebuild both in time and money and as I stated before ,your temp gauge will read normal ( half way) from 70 degrees , and even if this wasn't the reason your torque convertor wasn't locking ( though it still may be) then its still not hot enough for your engine .

New thermostat sitting on my desk. Waiting for 36mm spanner to arrive to take the fan off to then do the job.

I'm not keen trying to get my hands into that area with the fan on.

FWIW, the temp gauge sits firmly in the middle once it's got up to temp, apart from every now and then when it will dip right down again.

Nanocom is also on its way, so should be able to get temp from that too I think.

LOL, the spanner has just turned up!

No excuse now I guess. :)

Ha ha ........good timing , let us know after fitment if tc locks up better
Take note of how the thermostat goes on along with orientation of the hoses , your nanocom will be invaluable

New thermostat in. Went for a run, TC won't lock up still.

I'm resigned to the fact the auto will need to be rebuilt. I read in another thread the gear box is good for about 250k kms.

The randomness of when it locks up was my main worry. The transmission shop said that the ECU is pulsing the solenoid at the right time, but the TC won't get lock up.

Sounds similar to my thread and issues.

For what it's worth I have a quote from Ashcrofts for uprated torque converter, box with no exchange, cooler and lines and it came in at about $4500 landed (that even includes the GST). I guess about $4000 without the uprated converter.
I may be able to get that price down by another $400 as I have family in the UK so can potentially exchange a box with them.

I need to get around to getting a similar quote from the local ZF people to see how it compares, but at the moment I suspect that Ashcrofts will get a sale, the ZF guys will need to come in a fair bit cheaper for me to go for it, I know exactly what I am getting with Ashcrofts.

And in my Auto - It was the TC only that needed replacing.. ;)
