Worane, your problem is as below.
While I cannot comment on your hot old duck, the fact is that as you get older you lose nighttime receptors from your retinas.Quote:

You need much more light than a young'un to see and it takes longer for your eyes to adapt to the decrease in light from high to low beam.
Having said that , I find my 130/90s along with a really old PIAA harness gives me pretty good vision from my 2002 D2 headlights.
I had HID bulbs fitted to the under bumper Hellas in my RRC , but found the reflections from signs was painful. I have put off adding lights to the D2 and I avoid driving at night where possible. The bonus is it reduces you hitting wildlife also, and I haven't killed anything in 2+ laps of Oz.
