Disco TD5 auto vs V8 auto.

OK, first let me be clear, I know the torque converter is different. I would like this thread not to get side tracked like the other threads covering the same thing. I'm aware I can adapt the V8 torque converter to the TD5, especially if I talk to Ashcroft in the UK. I'm aware it is even a good idea as I have a remap ready to load.

    What I want to know is, if I have a ZF4HP22 from a D2a V8 and a buggered ZF4HP22 from a D2a TD5.

What is involved in making the V8 auto fit the TD5?
    Bellhousing - Check
    Torque converter - Check
Internal electrics? - Are they the same inside?
Top bracket for the shifter - Easy enough to change over?
    Anything else?

Help on this would be very much appreciated.

There is a thread somewhere, just can seem to find it.
The length is also different and mounts, I think the rear of trans case can be swapped from memory. Valving is different also I think.

What is not clear, will I need to change the valve body? It would appear not if I was using a ZF4HP24.

My Disco is currently in the shop having the transmi$$ion rebuilt (ouch) by some people who seem to know their stuff. From what I gather from a chat with them, rather than two distinct models, there were many incremental changes to the transmission between the 22 and 24, and then at some point they changed the stamp (from 22 to 24) to reflect that.

Probably not helpful at all, and I'm only putting my spin on what I heard.

Just thinking gearboxes in general, I don't see any reason why you would need to change the valve body. I mean, if you took a gearbox from say, a Jeep, and modified the bell housing, then it would still work to transfer power from the engine to the diffs. I would think that electrical connections would be a bigger issue.

I have always been of the understanding that the auto in the Td5 and V8 are the same box. Different bell housings and torque converters were used, but the auto box is the same(talking the 22 variant) ... AND a different auto ECU is used for the V8 compared to the Td5 ... The V8 TC locks up at 60kmhr vs the 80kmhr the Td5 auto ECU locks up at. The auto is electronically controlled, not hydraulically controlled, so the operation/shift behavior is set solely by the auto ECU, not the valve body.

    AFAIK, what Fluids says,,
different T-Converter, different ECU, different length looks like your only concern though

... but if all he's doing is swapping the V8 TC and auto box onto the bell housing of the Td5 the final assembled length should be the same as he started with with the knackered Td5 auto ... same auto box ... Length will be identical.

The rear governer housing of the V8 auto will also have to be replaced with the TD5 one as it has different gear box mounts They are2 different part numbers.

Jazzman I know what you are trying to achieve.

have a look at diagram attached.

Firstly the Governor extension housing ( no 7)is bigger on the TD5 than the V8 one, so you need to swap that over, so the gear box mounts for the TD5 fit ( they are bigger than the V8 ones)

Number 2 is a spacer, there are 2 different sizes 15mm and 50 mm, you will need to swap over to extend the out put shaft further out through the thicker governor housing, so it has the extra length to engage the transfer input.
The out put shaft part number for TD5 and V8 is the Same, so the space (no 2 ) will lengthen the shaft.

The TD5 Bellhousing and torque converter from your TD5 trans is then fitted to the V8 Trans.
The Trans TD5 ECU in your Disco should control the valves in the donor V8 trans replacement.
With Nanocom or similar, do an adaptive reset on the Trans.
    Cheers,
    Mario
