I would also check the back of both fuse boxes as the cause of the problem could also be there I recently had one that was badly melted on the back of the internal fuse box there is a pic in this thread

How was the car behaving before hand? Lights on dash? Seems to havegot a massive spike in the power supply? So maybe an alternator check b4 you bung another ecu in.

Go over all your wiring loom carefully and look for any earths that are dodgy, clean back to bright metal and reconnect, spray a coat of paint over them after they are tight.

Then look at the alternator, making sure it hasn't got a faulty regulator.

Both the heavy cables to the battery should be checked, to see if the lugs need the solder refreshing in them.

Then after all the above is done, get yourself another ECU.

As already said, check the voltage from the alternator, though suspect more than just the Engine ECU would have suffered if it were voltage related.
I have an ECU to suit that model, PM me if you need.

Missus was driving ??

Got the alternator out today, its booked in to the test bench tomorrow. See how it replies.
No obvious burning or melting anywhere yet, Ill let you all know how I go.

I agree Strangy everything else seems to be working.
